Horizontal mounted Exhaust and Pipes

That's pretty funny. Most folks with a vertical exhaust on a working tractor will tell you that they'd rather have the underslung exhaust, so they are not getting exhaust in their face while driving the tractor.

The only time I've had exhaust in my face with the vertical exhaust is when I have a rain cap on it. That tends to direct the exhaust gases into my face no mater which way I mount it. Take it off and no problems.

That's great if your tractor never sits outside, even for an unexpected period. It also depends on how you use it. I find the vertical stack obtrusive in the way I use my Cub.

I would like to see some pictures of that modification. It is always fun and neat to see what some previous owners did to modify their tractors (usually on a budget, or to their taste, or both).

I've been down in your neighbor hood before on a one day motorcycle trip. Stopped for a bite to eat at the Eye Opener restaurant.

I grew up just down the road from the downtown, of course Battle Ground is not that big. I have never eaten at the Eye Opener believe it or not. TCs, the bar/restaurant down the road, has good food as well.

You should have let me know you were in the area I could have met you for lunch. My volunteer fire Department is right across the road. Steve

In addition to the muffler and pipe, you need a hangar bracket and U bolt. but you'll have to find the bracket elsewhere (possibly used).Bob

Bob, when I was looking at my tractor taking pictures I noticed I still have the hanger bracket. I believe I have a U Bolt big enough as well.

I think I have a spare bracket and u-bolt if you are interested.

Jim Becker said it all. I really want to get the exhaust back to the way it was on this tractor. It did not have a hole in the hood for a vertical pipe so I do not think it originally had one. Vertical or horizontal really does not matter to me.

For me I really like my straight pipes .. makes that C-60 sound nice .. throaty and smooth. Very seldom do I get exhaust in my face .. except as Rick said -- ifn I use the rain cap. I will be going back to no cap shortly on Granny and Ellie as they sleep in the barn. On the Lo-Boy, don't gots me no choice I gonna have a whistle pipe

Like Oil, hydraulic fluids, battery voltage, colour of the Cub or implements -- we all have our preferences. There isn't a wrong or a right as an absolute.

You said 1954 Cub, right?

The factory underslung exhaust on these tractors uses a "ball and socket" type joint where the manifold joins to the exhaust pipe.

Underslung exhaust was not an option until 1955 AFAIK, so odds are you have a customized setup. The threads in the manifold are standard iron pipe fittings, so hardware store plumbing parts could have been used for the elbow.

If this is a custom exhaust setup the factory pipe and muffler won't work for you without modifications. You should check before you make any purchases.

The change was at serial 185,001. Tractors 185,001 through 186,440 were built the later part of '54.
