Which Starter is Best for Now 12v '57 Cub with Alternator ?

Postby Cub Junk » Tue Jul 23, 2013 12:41 pm

The guy trying to rebuild our starter has ordered 3 different parts, none were right for it. No numbers on it, more's the pity. She is a 12 volt conversion, has new alternator, the previous one was bad. She doesn't have any lights yet, so that isn't a worry. It was running fairly well, then Our Ted shut her off to drag some branches to a pile, when he tried to restart her awhile later, smoke from the connection, ouch! We pulled the starter off & carried it back down here. Checked around, found a rebuilding place. Took it over there last week, he examined it, he couldn't find numbers either, took it apart, most still good shape, but the coils inside were burnt. He can't order the coils since he has no ref #. It only has 2 bolts to hold it on, and 1 hot connection. So, what should we look for, it looks as though it might have had a solenoid on top of it before, but there's a separate one now.

That's a 6v starter housing, and it did originally have a sadle start switch on it originally. But, since it had the lug removed for the stud, it's hard to say what may have already been changed out internally.
The 6v internals will work with 12v applied, as long as you don't hold it engaged too long.

Starters as you probably know are not cheap....You might check with Boss Hog or tst to see what they could do to help you....The guy rebuilding the starter should be able to know what is what....Without Monday morning quarterbacking the starter, I agree with mr Durban, its hard to tell whats in their, not knowing....Good luck...

if your starteris bad I would find a starter for a 1964 and up 12 volt . they are on ebay all the time. I have 4 just incase I need to replace a starter on a 6 volt cub that has been converted to 12 volt.

OK, the repaired starter worked a treat, then after she threw the mower belt, repeatedly, we finished readjusting the pulleys, it didn't want to start. Battery dead again! We're getting %^$&& at it. Then, readjusted the alternator to tighten that a bit. Put the battery on the charger for time to eat lunch, it started right up. husband made a short mowing pass, now what!!???!! Must have tightened the alternator just too much for the welded (?!) cam pulley, it separated. AARRGGHH! Time to head home. We'll try again soon as we can. Must find out about the pulley, can we just order one & have it be the right one? Or, will this be another case of ten different possibilities? Oh, and, I forgot to take a photo of the pulley!
