A22 Mower

Postby 69ranger » Fri Jul 26, 2013 9:56 am

Hello everyone,

I am still working as time permits on my A22 mower. I have a couple of questions. First and most important: Does anyone know what the belt number is for this mower? I would like to get one ordered.
The second question is: Is Blue the correct color on these mowers? I have removed all of the old paint and I am ready to prime and paint. It had 2 - 3 layers of red paint, but I never found any blue paint. It's not that big a deal, but I have to buy paint anyway, so why not get it right.
Thanks for the help,
Brad

Not sure about belt size. frame blue, shield red and pitman cream. According to paint committee decision.

My original paint and decals 22 mower is all red, except for the pitman and grass rods/brackets, which are cream. I'll check on the belt number tomorrow evening.

Hello,
Don that is a nice looking Super A, and mower you have. It is nice to have an original mower to compare to when restoring one like mine.
Thanks for the info on the mower, and belt. I will take the number you provided to our Napa store and see if the parts guy can get me a belt ordered.
I mounted one end of my Pit-man today, but will have to wait until I get it on the tractor to fit the other end. My slip joint for adjusting the register is froze up. I hope to just cut and fit my pit-man so it is in register. I heated, beat and twisted, and tried my best to break it free, but finally decided I would rather work around the problem than break something.
A member here is sending me a pulley so I wont have to weld my broken one. I hope to have all the pieces put together and do a trial run in a month or so.
Thanks again,
Brad

You might get lucky and the mower will be in register. Who knows?

Did you loosen the pinch bolts that hold the mower head to the bar? My mower was rusted so bad that I had to beat the knife bar out of the mower head, but the register adjusted easily.

Yip. the bolts are loose. This mower was rusted up some, but not really bad enough to keep that joint from moving. I think I will take another look at it. Maybe I missed a bolt or something. It's happened before.
This is a busy week for my family, as our county fair is going on. Maybe I will get some time to work on the mower next week.

If there is anything else I can check or get photos of for you, just let me know. The only thing that I'm aware of that I am missing is the PTO pulley guard.

Hello,
Don, Thanks for the offer of help with more pictures. I may need a picture or two when I start to put it all back together. I would love to know the measurements of the little shield the that goes in front of drive shaft, by the pit man.
I am missing that part, or so it seems. I would swear it was there when I unloaded all the other junk a year ago.

I also owe a big thanks to "Super A" for the parts he sold me. They arrived today and I am so glad to get them. It will make the restoration job so much easier.
Now........ to find the time to put it all together and try it out. I hope to have it all painted up and functional in time to take it to our fall show in October.

More to come as all the pieces fall into place.

The steel is 3/32 thick, whatever that works out to in gauge. The width is 8.5 inches. Width of the support strap is 1 inch. Vertical dimension is 4 inches. Horizontal dimension is 4 inches. Angular dimension is 5.5 inches. The angle appears to be 45 degrees. Corners are rounded.

Image
The support strap is welded .5 inch down from the top of the vertical.

Image
The holes are 7/16 inch diameter, centered .5 inch down from top of vertical. Holes are 1.5 inches apart, center to center. Holes are centered on width. Fastening hardware is two 3/8 X 1 inch carriage bolts, lock washers and hex nuts.

Image
Let me know if there are other views or dimensions that you need.

This is the same guard that mounts on the Cub-22 mower. If anyone is willing to make a dimensioned fabrication drawing of this part, I will bring it to the Tug.

Wow Don you really went to a lot of work. Those are great pictures, and them it should be pretty easy to fab one up. I never really dreamed it would be the same as the one for a cub. I have buddy that has break in his welding shop that I can use to bend the angle.
I picked up my belt last night. So once the rest of the pieces fall in to place I can belt it up. I have to fix a worn piece before I can go back together. The hole is worn pretty bad in my rear mounting bracket. There is a hole in the bracket that slips over the drive shaft tube and it is very worn. So I am off to the scrap yard to find a piece of pipe or tube that is a better fit to make a new one out of.
We shall see what turns up.

Thanks again for taking the time to provide the pictures, and the measurements.

Are you talking about the bracket that your angle iron mounts to? If so I have a good one if you need it.

Hello,
Yes Al. That is the piece. I should have looked at it before now, but I didn't pay any attention to it until I got ready to go back together. I am kind of surprised that it is worn as bad as it is. I think I am on my way now. I am going get an new bushing made to tighten it all up.
If this dont work I will take you up on the offer.

I mounted my mower to the 130 yesterday. I am still far from mowing grass, but at least it is on the tractor. I am going to try and fit my new wood on my pit man today. My biggest problem seems to be the rear mounting bracket. It all looks pretty simple as far as the mounting goes, but that said I can't seem to get stuff to line up. I am wondering if the brackets having came from two different mowers might have something to do with it.
Any ideas or pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad
