My Low Hour '61 Cub

Postby ricky racer » Tue Jul 23, 2013 8:33 pm

A while back I mentioned that the '61 Cub that I had purchased seemed to be a very low hour tractor. I mentioned the lack of any slop in the tie rods or steering, the throttle quadrant still looks like new with no wear on the serrations or lever and the amount of tread left on the original tires. I was out in the shop tonight and decided to take a couple of pictures to compare the tread on the original front tires on the '61 to the front tires on my '52 that I purchased new from Tucker Tire 5 or 6 years ago.

Here is the original front tire on the '61. The tire is a U.S. Royal same as the rear tires. I never heard of U.S. Royal maybe it later became Uniroyal. Image

Here is the front tire on my '52.

I still haven't gotten a battery yet to trouble shoot the Cub yet. However, I did have a set of new seat cushions on hand that I quickly installed.

Ricky, that's pretty amazing. I did some digging on US Royal tire - their molds still exist for car tires, but don't see that the tractor molds are still in use. The condition of these tires really shows what storing equioment inside will do for preservation.

You are correct, Ricky. US Royal became Uniroyal, probably in the late 60s.

Rick:

I like the front shoes. Very nice condition for their age. Barn kept has it's advantages. I think that is going to be a nice Lo-boy for you.

Don't mean to hijack ok ... :)

Whoa there ..... Dave :!:

What year 442? W-30 option? Factory? Hard top .. 2 door or rag top?

I had 6 of the 1969 model which is clearly my favourite. 2 rag tops and 4 2 door hard tops. All of em went like a bat outa HE.. :!: and got about 10 gallons to the mile  But man could they get your blood flowing. :-:-): I have always wanted another one to restore but finding them are really difficult.

Funny cause I ran Tiger Paws on my 442's in the winter and the Summer UniRoyal Radials the rest of the year as well.

Hijacked again....Sorry....Rudi, my 442 was a 66, green 2doorHT.....My ol man had a 65 green/white 2door HT.....At the same time....He could outdrive me so the 65 always ruled....The local PD had his name above mine on their list of violators...But in my defense believe it or not mine had an open rear end....Tough to take off with on a rainy day....And speedometer goes up, gas gauge goes down....He cracked his up and bought a1968 Rebel station wagon.... but true.....And then a 1970 Challenger ( his last car)....Yep we were the real Dukes of Hazard back then....

I wonder why that was? Same phenomenon used to plague me with my 69's. And I was being a good boy

NOT :-:-):

Sorry Rick ... :big give up:

But to make up .. around that time I actually was getting good on the 650 Bonney and the Norton Commander that my Dad was playing with. The Bonney was and will always be my favourite while my Dad's was always the Beemers. He used to test them on cinder tracks back in '48 and 49' outside of Frankfurt.

Now back to that '61 Lo-Boy. Need more pics Rick :D

The '61 is not a Lo-Boy. I have a '57 Lo-Boy that I am currently trying to sell. Not much interest though. Most Cubs I sell are gone within 1 day to 2 weeks. This one isn't moving. It has been keeping the '61 company in the barn.

Image

I haven't purchased a battery for the '61 yet so there has been no progress on it yet. That is coming soon so I can get started on it. Can't wait to hear it run!!! :{_}:

Always wanted a Norton but have never even gotten a to ride one. :(

What was I thinking   I see the difference now. Looking good in the barn there.

I liked the English bikes. No longer ride though. The last bike I rode was a Honda 500 that Em's youngest brother has.

I had a 66 L79 Nova SS. Same here, the high performance Chevy 2 was in an entirely different league compared to the GTO. But I really liked the 66 GTO. I got about 18 mpg just going down the road in my little Chevy.
