Gathering firewood

Postby Winfield Dave » Mon Jul 15, 2013 8:33 pm

They are trimming the power line behind the house and have cut a few larger trees down.
My brother was up over the weekend and we did some gathering.

It was the first real test of my new tongs http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_48125_48125
They worked beautifully - so much faster and easier than a chain...especially during the 'release'.

It is so nice not having to "muscle" the logs any more.

Yup, Image to what Bill said. That trailer seems to be a heck of a load for that lo-boy. How did it handle :?:

Wind storm couple months ago knocked down some huge trees. Have a set to tongs. Planning on using the tongs to skid the tree trunks and large branches out of a deep ditch. Well, that's the plan. May not have large enough machinery to pull 3' diameter tree trunks up the steep incline.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Nice job retrieving the logs Dave! ...and I like the dump trailer! I have a set of the exact tongs, they do make loading a bunch easier. I am also a big fan of not getting off the machine any more than necessary, I like the rope! ...and looks like the jib pole is earing it's keep too.

That's pretty cool, I have that pole for my 3-Point hitch - I wonder if I can buy the tongs separately? Love the photos, thanks for sharing.

Nice job Dave! Good work. Looks great.

Did the Cub get light in the back end at all with some of the larger logs?

TSC, (Tractor Supply Company), has tongs and other logging items.

Nother edit: Posco, where did you purchase the log arch? Price? Size?

That's a nice looking setup. I just picked up a new log arch yesterday and as soon as I'm finished with maintenance and some arc flash I'm hitting the woods.

I'll post up a pic for you later in the day. I bought it from a guy who makes them and sells them on ebay. It was $530.00 with free shipping. The guy did everything he said he would in a very timely fashion the arch is built for stout! He makes a very nice product. I looked at one locally that's no better and probably inferior that was going for over a thousand. Let me know if this works if you would.

I had considered building a log arch just like that one but our winch has been working well for years.
Dad had run thousands of board feet of lumber thru the sawmill using it.
