What model is this?

Postby Tezell » Tue Jun 18, 2013 9:30 am

Fellows,

I need some help with this Cadet. I know very little about them. My questions are....what model is it? Is it one one the preffered Cadets with the Koler engine? Is it an early 70's model? And finally, how much is it worth?
Here is the link.....http://dothan.craigslist.org/grd/3867321520.html

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Tim,

It looks like it may be a Cub Cadet 1450/1650. Hard to tell with the decals being so faded. I don't think it is a 1250 as it has hydraulic lift and not many of the 1250's had hydraulic lift - they had a manual lever for the deck lift.

Yes, it does have a Kohler engine in it. It also has the Kohler starter instead of the starter/generator. This is classified as one of the "wide frame" tractors.

Nice that it has the head lights on it. That was an option not many people paid for on the front end.

Thanks for the info.

What should I offer him. What is it worth in it's present state?

Tim,

Unfortunately I'm not a very good judge of Cub Cadet values or other machinery for that matter.

Looking at the photo, both front tires were flat at one time or another. One is still going flat, whilst the other may be holding its own. The gas tank which should be under the hood is sitting on the driver's seat. That is a clue there something else is going on. Both side panels are missing - are they just off the tractor or are they permanently missing in action?

Does the tractor run and move without any strange noises? What is the steering like? Sloppy? (More than likely - look at the front tire tread wear).

When I asked a gentleman here about a CC 1200 I was ready to sell that was fully refurbished - machine shop engine rebuild, new drive train, new brakes, and a whole laundry list of other things, he replied, "$550.00 if you're lucky".

I just about flipped! If that's true, then the tractor you're looking at should be given to you and money to boot to just haul it off. J/K.

They are good strong tractors and they will surprise you, but they all have their own quirks. Especially the engine mounts. Those are a bear to remove and install, and these particular Cub Cadets liked to eat those engine mounts.

It also depends on what you're going to do with it. Use it or fix it up and re-sell it? As you probably know, you'll never get your money out that you put in.

Don't know if you're familiar with this website or not, but TractorData.com has a lot of info. You can check out a 1200, a 1450, or a 1650 and see which one looks closest (or another model). Check it out here: http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractor ... ctors.html

And yes, I've heard the engine mounts wear out and give owner's trouble. If it's in not-running condition, I wouldn't give any more than $150-$200.

Considering the apparent condition, consider it a parts machine. Worth, not much, since you don't know it's condition of the tractor or the deck.

I personally wouldn't consider purchasing the machine, unless I had one or two others of similar model needing parts.
I have an excuse. CRS.

My guess is a 1450. It would have a 14 hp Kohler, Hydro drive and hydraulic lift, and has the "Quitline" air breather.
They also made a 12 hp, and 16 hp in the same configuration

Tim,

Here's one in my state so you can see the differences in the machine's shape and the price asking here: http://asheville.craigslist.org/grd/3880137495.html

As you can see, the gas tank is in the proper place, side panels are on, and this one just appears to be in better shape.

Hope this helps.

Tim,

I understand the allure of yet another machine. One real word of warning: The parts for these models of Cub Cadets can get expensive real quick. I put way too much money into the Cub Cadet 1200 I rebuilt, but I was determined that machine wasn't going to beat me.

Yes, it turned out to be one fine piece of equipment. The new owner still loves it too. I also learned a great deal about tear down and repairing that particular Cub Cadet.

Bottom line: My labor was free, and my pocket book refuses to open up like that ever again.

Lesson well learned: Once burned, twice learned!

Tim,

Here's a Cub Cadet 1200 that was "refurbished". http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/grd/3874221226.html This guy originally had it listed at $1499.00 and when it didn't sell, he went up by $200.00!

I wanted you to see this one as a 1200 is a gear drive, whereas the tractor you inquired about was hydrostatic.

Thanks for the advise and the links.

I did get a response this morning and y'all were right it is a 1450. I also asked was it locked up and got no comment.

After what has been said here I am leaning towards passing on this one.

Thanks again fellows.

Smart move. Very smart move. You can now take some $$$ and put it on your Farmall Cub.
