I bought this MT many years ago when I was in high school (2003) and used it for a number of years till the insulator broke in the distributor and so I parked it till I could find a new one. fast forward about 5 years later. I have finally gotten my cubs(that's right more than one) done so back to the JD to mow about 5 acres with the #5 mower that came with it.
the biggest thing that I am worried about after the tractor has sat is the oil pump loosing prime. I have checked and the motor is free and the oil looks good(I am going to change it anyway). what is the best way to ensure prime? I have a new filter so I thought about pulling off the filter and squirting oil down the passage much like I did on one of my cubs. will this work? I am just trying to avoid damage to the motor because it was running great when I parked it any help would be great. and of course a picture

Re: Help Bringing back to life 1950 JD MT
I have practically no experience with JD tractors, but I do know that the oil pump loosing prime on a cub is because the oil pump is located on the back of the block behind the flywheel, and has to suck the oil up a tube. On most engines the oil pump is located in the oil pan, so the priming is not a problem.

John is right. The oil pump in an MT is in the oil pan and should not have lost prime as long as it still has plenty of oil in it. It may take a few seconds to register after starting to refill the oil filter housing since it has been sitting a while.
