Hi all - I've got the lift spring from my manual lift in the e-tank, getting cleaned up. Oviosuly the spring is relaxed and tight. Wondering if there is any trick for painting the inside so it looks nice once it's installed. I guess I should have said first, how does one prep the inside of the spring for painting?
The seat spring of course was easy.
Have a great day - Ken

Might be a good candidate for the blast cabinet, for cleaning. Painting, spray, best you can. Ed

Piece of cake
Hang it from an overhead point (chain hoist, etc.), hang concrete blocks from the free-end until spring has lengthened to expose the coils adequately, run a steel bore brush (Fastenal is your friend) through it, paint in position... reverse process and install.

Howdy and thanks for the feedback.
Is this the type of brush you use?

Re: Cleaning & Painting Lift Spring
Ken, you're welcome...
I don't have the part number of the bore brush I got from Fastenal anymore; worked with the counterman to find the longest shank available for the diameter I wanted. Really helped with the front/rear cultivator assist springs, though I had to make a longer adapter for my 1/2" drill motor.
I've even made a short "leg", long "arm" I~~~~~~~~~~I-bracket to keep spring coils moderately open while bead-blasting or painting so as top hit all surfaces; makes a great handle too.

Re: Cleaning & Painting Lift Spring
don't stretch it any further than necessary nor leave it longer than necessary, they are old and metal fatigue will cause it to stretch and not have as much pull as original if you are not careful.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

Ken, those are hones, not brushes. McMaster is a good source too. I have a number of sizes for this purpose including a large duct brush with extensions for cleaning the inside of torgue tubes and axle housings http://www.mcmaster.com/#tube-brushes/=n8e06g

Ken:
Rifle or gun bore brushes work very well. I get them at Princess in different sizes. I would like some bigger ones but the few I have used so far have done the job.
These types are available at Harbor Freight:
9 Piece Tube/Pipe Nylon Brush Set - $4.99
10 Piece Tube Brush Kit - $6.99
It is nice to have varying sizes on hand. Plus the price isn't so steep that if you ruin one it hurts....
