Woods 42 from Cub fit SA?

Postby Dale Finch » Wed Apr 03, 2013 8:06 pm

I am pretty sure the answer is NO, but someone asked me if a Woods 42 mower would fit a Super A? Don't think the mule drive would fit the finals...am I right? Thanks.

The bigger issue is that the PTO on a Super A turns at 540 rpm, and the PTO on a cub turns at engine speed (or 1000 rpm, can never remember) and the opposite direction of the Super A. So, your mower would turn in the wrong direction and at the wrong speed.

The SA would have a larger pulley , that takes care of the speed but the rest would take a LOT of home making to reverse the rotation and get it mounted

Thank you, guys! Forgot about the PTO direction and the speeds...ah, so much to know and learn!! Guess I had BETTER make it to the BOSS HOGG FARMALL SCHOOL in May!!

Hey, Boss, what is the approximate cost to convert a 6v '55 Cub to 12v? My neighbor who bought a '55 6v cub from me might be interested in the conversion, and maybe I could bring it to the VA Fest along with one of mine.

I am not Boss Hog, but an alternator and brackets will run $80 to $100, then a new battery, around $80, plus new light bulbs, around $25. Old generator could probably be sold for around $45 to $60 on Ebay.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Could you use a resistor on the light circuit and keep the 6v bulbs with satisfactory results?

I'll discuss this with Larry, the new owner, and see what he wants. Thank you!

My SA don't run the mower from the PTO but rather the belt drive which is 1175 rpms, however it does take a different mule drive than the Cub

In a word, no.

It would have to be a BIG resistor because it would have to dissipate a lot of heat. Even bigger than the one on the coil. You got 3 bulbs burning at 35W apiece, that's 105W total. At 6V that's 17.5A. The coil only draws a couple Amps.

The biggest resistor you can get at Radio Shack is 1W.

By the time you source and buy a big enough resistor, you could just replace the bulbs.
