Different Planter Models for SA-140 Tractors

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Mon Jun 10, 2013 10:52 am

What were all of the different models of Planters made for the Super A-140 tractors? I know there were the runner planters, but there were 3 or 4 seed hopper types and drives for them that you could get. I just don't know what the actual Model Name of the different Planters are. I have found very little info on this searching the internet.

#1) I am in need of some parts for the planters (probably the same across the different models).

#2) I am going to Red Power Roundup and would like to be able to look for and purchase some Parts Manuals and Owners Manuals for all of the different models of Planters.

You need a SAI-1A (Maybe the early edition was SAI-1) Implements for Use With Farmall Super A Tractors manual. I will try to remember to check mine tonight for you. Off the top of my head there was an A-178 and an A-180, nearly identical, IIRC an A-170 Blackland planter, etc. On about all of them the countershaft and all was the same, you could order whatever hopper & base you wanted.

Thanks AL. Yeah, I really need to get one of those books. I would like to have the Parts Manual for them and the Manual that shows you how to hook up, adjust, etc. (probably owners manual).

I recently bought a 1976 (with revisions all the way through 1980) Parts Manual for the Farmall Cub. I believe it was called "Implements for Use with Farmall Cub - Parts Manual". Very Handy Book Indeed. Having that and the individual Implement manuals would be what I'm looking for. The ones for the Cub are all on this site (I think), and having the Super A-140 versions, would complete my set.

My SAI-1A was one of the very first antique tractor-related purchases I ever made. I bought it mail-order in the early '90s from Binder Books, back when Scott Satterlund (the original owner along with his wife) was still living. Anyway it was in very good shape and it has revisions 1 thru 11 in it. Revision #11 is dated 4-'56. I don't know how many of these planters remained available later in the 100/130/140 era.

Anyway. According to the table of contents, they made the following planters:

A-170, AV-170
A-171
A-172, AV-172
A-177
A-179
A-178, AV-178
A-180, AV-180
All of the above have the same countershaft, same one as the fertilizer distributor. The main difference was the ground engaging unit. In some cases the biggest difference was "year produced." The 178 and 180 planters look nearly identical. So do the 177 and 179, they are described as blackland planters. The A-172 reminds me the most of the Cub planter. The 171 is a blackland planter and looks, you guessed it, a lot like the 177 and 179. The A-170 looks sort of like the 172.

A-218, A-219
A-222
A-201
--these were rear mounted, two row planters. No similarity with the one row belly mounted planters other than hopper choices. 218 was a checkrow, 219 and 201 was a drill planter, and 222 was a power hill drop.

A-270-Looks like a two-row, A 170.

Vegetable planters:
A-435, A-635 Rear-mounted, 4 and 6 row respectively. These had the Planet Jr. row units.
A-674-Belly mounted, six row veggie planter, also Planet Jr, different configuration.

So, that's just planters!

Wow, that is one heck of a line-up! Yeah, I felt like the ground engaging unit was what was different on most of them (the runner). In particular, one of the parts I need....is to find several planter drive clutch cogs, as some of the units I have the cog teeth are worn and rounded and need replacing (Cub Planters too). They are probably going to be hard to come by.
