Tato planting

Postby SONNY » Thu May 23, 2013 9:51 am

Just got 50# of the 250# of tatoes planted.---keep getting rained out!---got more of the gardens tilled, but keep getting enough rain to make another flush of weeds come up, so gotta tear them up,----gonna be bad year for weed control and bug control, I am thinking!--at least in this area!

Used the new creeper to plant the 50# of tatoes with, and it did a fair job.--yesterday I re-did some of the main frame on the creeper and am looking at trying to slow down the ground speed a lot more if I can! cant farm, so might as well get the equipment tweeked a bit more so its ready to hit the dirt when I can go!! thanks; sonny

Sonny, I have been following your progress on the creeper and your other projects.

I am very impressed with your ingenuity.

Keep them coming!

At this point I need a 12" diameter (60 tooth) #50 chain sprocket and can only find an 8" and thats too small.---internet search dont bring up any place that has a 12" dude, so not sure where to get one!---used to have them on combines and other farm equipment but so far no luck there either!
still changing more stuff on the creeper.

The cub does pull the water bar really good too!---did a quick test of it the other day and am ok with the results .---all I need to do on it yet is to mount the row sprayer for bug-a-side spraying and I can get multi-use from that unit without changing anything except sliding the big tank off and strapping the little 9 gallon jobbie in its place! (getting behind on fruit tree spraying due to rain)
still too wet to plant/till/mow today!---very cold here again---next few days look to be on the hot side! LOL!!!

Strawberries are loaded with berries this year and will soon be turning ripe and need to be picked!
wheat, hulless oats, and barley are about knee high right now and do look good so far!
tomatoes look a lot better and have grown several inches this last week!---have cabbage seedlings ready to go into the ground too as soon as it drys up again.---onions need cultivated but are growing like weeds---thats about for this report! thanks ; sonny

Thats exactly what I was afraid of!!!---this year being late and the bugs are going to kill the stuff before it has a chance to get tough enough to repel them!---gonna take a lot of spray and a lot of bug pickin by hand this year!!---I never did find anything that would kill the tato beetles last year and not sure what to try this year!
We had a couple inches of rain this past week and more coming, so its getting pretty grim looking for a decent garden year this year!---hope to grow a little,---will plant no matter how late and take chance of getting something to grow! thanks; sonny

You need a tobacco transplanter modified to plant potatos. It would be much faster, and easier on you.
Best,
Mike

The first tatoes are just breaking ground tonight,---NOW ,--gotta start spraying them for bugs and start pushing dirt up around them before the plants get too big to get between! thanks; sonny

Got the 12" sprocket here local at our Motion Industry warehouse , He got it the next day out of Chicago someplace!---He is pretty good about getting me the wild stuff I need for my homemade stuff!
Got the creeper back on its wheels and planted the other 200 # of tatos with it,--weeded the onions with it and got 7 rows of sweet corn planted with it!---I think Virginia took some pics of the last tato planting!---She also took some of the wheat, oats, and barley,---now almost waist high and heading out, so if we dont get big storm again and knock it down again we might get a few oats! (heck of a way to get a bowl of oatmeal!)----a buddy of mine might have an oat roller to mash the kernels so we will see how it goes!---I still need a de-huller to use on regular oats and other grains! thanks; sonny
