New twist for the Hog Waller fest

Postby Boss Hog » Sun May 26, 2013 12:48 pm

The Tour Bus will be leaving Hog Waller Thursday AM headed for Appomattox Va :D :D :D
I think we have about 12 or so lined up for the trip. We are coming up on the 150 adversity of Lees surrender to Grant , there has been a lot added since the last time i was there about 20 years ago.

Been there 3 times myself Boss but always ready to look around some more.
I think you and I are going to be highly out numbered by Yankees on this trip.

As for us Yankees Yogie we are humble winners. By the way will you be sitting on the North or the South side of the bus? Just asking thats all.

If Boss is driving I'll be the one real close to the nearest exit Joe.
You and I might have to bump heads a little when we get up to the surrender triangle.

Having lived in Vicksburg for years, I've learned quite a bit about The War of Northern Aggression. I hope to make it up that way one day and tour with y'all

I have my seat reserved, but I'm a tad confused. I was born and grew up from further south than just about all of you, and my dad was from Mississippi (about as far south as they make 'em), but Florida is full of Yankees...so what does that make me??!!!!

One ole southern boy that surrendered at Appomattox stacked his arms at the triangle and turned looking up at the US flag he paused and saluted saying "Ole flag, I guess your all mine now "

Being a Civil War reenactor for so many years this is what I enjoy most about cub fests. Seeing members coming together from all over the United States who have different accents and at times even have problems understanding each other.
Something said to a member from La or Al. will mean something totally different to a memeber from the New England states so there's usually a lot of explaining going on at our events.
Could you imagine the even larger differnce relating back 150 years ago when people didn't travel as much as today.

Boss and I being from the central area usually do the decifering between the two since we understand all things and have no accent at all.

Dale, thanks for the update on the family tree. I've mistaken you for a Yankee for several years now....
You can set beside me at the nearest exit on the bus. I'll try to explain what Joe Malinowski is saying as we travel.
He's a pretty big boy so I might need your help when I get him in a head lock in the angle at Appomattox.

Now that is a great plan! I have wanted to go there for a while and it will be great fun to see it with such good friends.

http://www.nps.gov/apco/index.htm (also has the complete list of paroles issued!)

Speaking of good friends....
" Ever since the Mexican War General Grant had been a dear friend of my Soldier. At the time our first baby was born the two armies were encamped facing each other and they often swapped coffee and tobacco under flags of truce. On the occasion of my son's birth bonfires were lighted in celebration all along Pickett's line. Grant saw them and sent scouts to learn the cause. When they reported, he said to General Ingalls:
"Haven't we some kindling on this side of the line? Why don't we strike a light for the young Pickett?"

In a little while bonfires were flaming from the Federal line. A few days later there was taken through the lines a baby's silver service, engraved: "To George E. Pickett, Jr., from his father's friends, U. S. Grant, Rufus Ingalls, George Suckley." "

From http://docsouth.unc.edu/fpn/pickett/pickett.html
The Heart of a Soldier, As revealed in the Intimate Letters of Genl. George E. Pickett C.S.A.

I can only guess that Rufus was at Appomattox to meet up with his old friends.

Yeah, having no accent makes it easier to infiltrate the "enemy" lines while out on patrol for those yankee cubs!!!
