U-1 power unit-s

Postby Former Member » Thu May 02, 2013 4:17 pm

I brought home 1 of 3 power units today. It is the most complete one, but it is stuck.

I am ignorant as to these as far as values, as-is, restored and working or as parts. I have not found a lot of info doing computer searches.

Any help would be appreciated, I will need it.

Dale:

All depends. Running, complete, stuck ??? Will determine the price. I bought most of a PU last fall for about $200.00. I have an engine ... so I figure good deal. See them on :eBay: selling anywhere from $100.00 for stuck to $400.00 or so for a running complete unit. Restored, gonna be a more. Also depends on what the PO wants and the PO is willing to give ...

Dale - As you can see, the basic block is about all that is usable for a tractor. The front casting & radiator is different, flywheel is same but clutch set up is different. Mag/dist is same - lower water outlet is different also I think. Mine was a running engine so just switched necessary parts to make it work! Good luck! Dusty B

Dale are you sure they are true U 1 power units? They don't look like mine as far as the clutch assembly.

Dale that is a combine engine. Pretty sure for a 52R. What does the serial number tag say, especially the prefix letters ahead of the actual number?

I bought a 50B power unit last fall at a consignment auction for $180. The 50B is for a baler, no clutch, 90 degree gearbox, and a belt pulley. It's not stuck, has a carb and a mag, the radiator hoses and plug wires are dry rotted. Pull the dip stick and the oil looks brand new. Sent it's serial number and that it was for a power unit along with one for a tractor for the free IH gas cap and got two back. My power unit has the same dent in the hood as yours, maybe they're supposed to be that away.

And that is the one I have - for a 50B .. had the 90 degree gearbox -- gonna pick the gearbox up in the fall.

I have an Owner's Manual for the U-1, and I think for a couple other PU's. Let us know what model it is. To me it looks like it is from a 52R Combine SN seems to be 2527.

So are the 50B and 52R both U 1 power units?

One of the others might be a 50B if this is the 52R. It has a V belt pulley instead of the clutch assembly.

In a word, yes, but I don't think they always called them U-1's when they were on an IH implement. When I got my combine I emailed Guy Fay about the serial number (580!) and he said the numbers for power units, combines, balers, etc. were separate from each other.

My guess is that if the power unit was sold attached to an IH product it had a corresponding designation, 50B for balers, 50R for combines, etc. If it was sold in a crate for use on something else like a Ferris Wheel or large water pump then it was a U-1 power unit.Again just my guess.

That's basically what Guy Fay said.

The U1 has several different characterist such as the hood , clutch and most have shutters that is just some of the things on the top of my head, Jim Becker could explain better or Boss Hog has one I am getting parts from.

didn't the ones for the 52R combine have a second groove on the crankshaft pulley? I read someplace that it drove the unloader auger.
