172 Planter Hopper

Postby JMCHRISTIAN » Sun Mar 24, 2013 7:28 am

Need some information, I have a 172 planter hopper they seem to be scarce as hens teeth, not alot of info. or parts out there for them. Were they not popular or a good designed planter? Is the 174 a better planter? Are they more valuable than the 174? I am trying to decide whether to use the 172 and try to round up the needed seed plates and parts or go with a 174 hopper. I have the 174 drive and runner already. Could one of you great GURUS shed some light on this matter.

Boss has hoppers. You see them selling on eBay for as low as $30 or asking as high as $90. I bought a beauty for 30 something with lid and perfect tin. I am talking Richmond corn hoppers. What kind of hopper do you have? A "172" is not locked into one kind of hopper. Since you are in Texas, a lot of Single Seed equipment was sold there in black dirt country and Single Seed hoppers are scarce and plate selection is limited and they are not all that sophisticated in design- basically a selection of different sized round holes. Hoppers were considered "common units" which is why you don't even see them in the parts book with the "planter"

The difference between a 172 generation and the 174 is the hopper and hopper drive design. Everything else is the same except for some mounts on the very early 172s. With a 172, there was a drive for the Richmond hopper Duplex hopper, a drive for the Single Seed hopper, and a the POAX hopper for cotton and corn with a special adapter. This was expensive for IH to carry all these parts an expensive for farmers that needed to change styles for best performance. The Single Seed was dropped, and the combination hopper was designed to handle cotton and corn without expensive drive changeovers. They made a lower cost adapter for the Duplex hopper. Functionally, for planting, there is no difference between the 172 and 174. They both use the same plates IF you have the Richmond hopper

If you do have the Single Seed, I would set up the Combination Hopper for serious work. It is a much better design and has far more seed plates available.

Best i can figure I have the single seed hopper. The seed plates have four tabs on the I.D. of the seed ring instead of the round hole and 16 or so slots as is shown for the combination hopper. This planter buisness is so confusing, we don't have a learning curve here, we have a mountain to climb!

It is much easier than you think. The combination is the best hopper compared to the single seed that you have.

Just to clarify, the 172 seed plates with the 4 tabs on the I.D. will not work on a combination hopper. The seed plates for a combination hooper have a center hole surrounded by radiating slots. Do I have this correct?

Are there any pictures of a single seed hopper, base and drive so I can easily identify them?

If you go to (New) manuals above, you can download CBI-1A and that has the planter and all the hopper combinations. It is a 15 meg file.

Here is a link to it. http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/download.php?fname=./files/Implement%20Parts%20manuals/CBI-1A%20Rev%2016%202-62%20OCR.pdf If you are familiar with pdf bookmarks on the left, find them and look for Section 8 to see the basic hardware for the runner. Section 13 has the hopper drives and there is a section for the Single Seed Hopper so you can navigate right to it. I can help you find it if you get lost (there is a lot of stuff) as I bookmarked that manual myself.

We now know you have a Single Seed hopper and Single Seed plates. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a "172" Hopper or "172" plates. if you start asking elsewhere, on a 172 you could have four different incompatible plates depending on what hopper you have. It gets confusing and took a bit of study to understand the different options.

171 & 172 Planter

Postby dan817 » Wed May 07, 2014 7:20 am

I have Cub-171 & Cub-172 Planter manual that came with Tractor, it doesn't show a fertilizer hopper and attachment with it
does anyone have any info or pics on the fertilizer hopper I've looked at this dwg. http://partstore.caseih.com/us/midsouth ... 1ar1298281
but am still having trouble putting the hopper back together as some parts are missing or broken

If you go to Rudi's Manual server (above), and look at Cub Implement Manuals, you wil get this page:
http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Cub%20Implement%20Manuals/index.html
which lists 3 manuals for fertilizer attachments. Either of the first 2 will cover a hopper like you probably have. There are additional illustrations of the hoppers in those manuals. If the hopper doesn't match, the third manual has the later style hopper (although not much help on the illustrations).

Post back if you have specific questions.
