IH #2 Trailer

Postby jlmason81 » Mon Feb 11, 2013 7:20 pm

I picked up a nice IH #2 Trailer today. It looks to have all original paint and decals. Do most IH #2 Trailers have a serial number plate? The ones I have seen searching the web do not look like they do. What brand and style tire were used originally on these trailers? Any idea how to tell what year it was made? Any information and pictures would be appreciated. Thanks.

Heres the kicker. After we came to a conclusion on the price the owner told me he bought the trailer 15 years ago at an estate sale for $15.00. :(

They made those trailers for many years, starting in the late 1960s, and ending in/around 1980 when IH went out of business. That one looks to be one of the later ones, just because of the large IH decal, that is not the IH with the border and INTERNATIONAL under it like this one:

Image

This would have been on the early models of this trailer, through the mid 1970s.

The tires originally would have been Goodyear or Firestone, smooth rib tires.

I believe only the later trailers had the serial number plate on them, again, probably starting with the *1000/1050 series tractors in 1976, or *82 series Cub Cadet tractors in 1979. I'm guessing, but the '76' at the end of your serial number probably stands for 1976.

That one sure is in good shape. My dad had one just like it, and we used to duct tape the tailgate seams, and fill it with water to water the garden. You'll be amazed what that little trailer will haul!

GiTractorMan,

Thank you for the information. I questioned if the 76 at the end of the serial number stood for it being manufactured in 1976. What do these little trailers sell for in this kind of shape. I am not going to sell it and if I do I will pass it along to a friend for what I gave for it. I sure wish I only had to give $15.00 for it. That about made me sick after he told me!

Hard to say on the price, but I'd guess probably $50 to $100 in that condition.

Nice find! It does look in good, original condition. I would love to find one for $50 - $100 in that condition, the ones I have seen for sale start over $100, but asking and taking can be two different things.

Enjoy!
David

I must have given way to much then. You dont find these originals that often in my area, not to mention I havent seen many online for sale either. I would expect these to bring more in the $250-$300 range.

Location and availability is always a factor, I expect they are a little more common here as Cub Cadets seem to be. I have seen restored ones go for the range you noted on Cub Cadet forums (or that is what was being asked). I was happy paying $100 for one that was pretty straight and no serious rust, but had been repainted (possibly a couple times, with a brush!).

If you are happy, that is what matters! :big afro:

Enjoy it,
David

I've seen several in similar condition bring $250-300 at Red Power Round-Ups. The #1 carts in nice shape will bring double that to a collector.

Yea, it's all supply and demand. Several years ago I would have said $200 here, but lately nothing seems to bring any kind of money.

I just had a really nice Cub Cadet 102, very original condition with good original paint and decals, every part and piece was there, but the ignition needed to be gone through. Didn't have spark. Engine had good compression and sounded good when you cranked it. Anyway, was going to restore the tractor, but decided I had too many projects. A buddy wanted it, so I sold it to him for $200. Well, his wife pissed a fit, and now it's on Craigslist. Been there for about a month. He added the correct headlight and tail lights to it, which he bought off e-bay, so the tractor is even nicer now than when I sold it to him. He started off asking $300 for it, and I saw it this evening listed for $150. That just seems to be how things are going here.

Tomcat,

There is a fairly nice one located in Baton Rouge, La on Craigslist I believe. You should check it out.

Those #1 and #2 IH carts are becoming quite collectable! This # 2 is in great shape and I would not sell it for anything lower than 150.00 . They have a 800# load capacity, and a 4.5 bushel {level load} carring capacity. Dumping action is controlled from the tractor operator's seat. They were still being sold in 1975 as far as I know of. Maybe I would sell it for more depending on my mood that time of day, lol! I got my #2 cart out of the scrap yard for $11.00 without any tires. But its not in very good shape, yet still functions as should! The tires, at least the ones I have seen on the #2 cart were the Goodyear 4 rib with the diamond shape tread along the sides of the tire. My uncle had a set of Original rims and tires that he gave to me and that's what I now run on my #2 cart. The Original rims were special. They had a grease fitting on each rim, but then again those Originals were just about all their own any how!
