This was a little bigger project than i thought it was going to be when i started, but it seems that way everytime i start a new one anyways. I had this idea for a fue years and was coming up with a plan to tackel this wall. The biggest thing was how much did the 2x2x6 blocks weigh and how was i going to pick them up? So i went and bought one of the blocks and went to some scales to weigh the block and found out that it weighs a little over 3000 pounds ea. I then went by a friends place to see if his backhoe would pick it up, it did, so it was on from there. Me and and a good friend did most of the work along with the help of the ford backhoe and a bobcat.

I bet you're glad that's done. I had to remind myself how big those blocks were to realize how much useable flat ground you gained.

That's a lot of work. Them blocks is heavy. Sure is a difference in before and after. Much more usable now and sure looks pretty :D
 
Looks like an episode from HGTV! I bet in a few years the boys will be jumping thier bicycles off that! :shock:
maybe they will get on an episode of Jacka@@ :D Nice work as always Clint.
 
Looks great! What's one of those blocks cost? And for the caps also? I got a retaining wall I built out of railroad ties, roughly 130 of em, and I'm sure in a dozen years of so I'm going to need to go to something more permanent like this. Good job!
 
The blocks come in two sizes, they are made out of the extry concrete that the trucks bring back to the plant. The 2x2x6 are $25.00ea and the 2x2x3 and the caps are $30.00ea. I dont under stand why the smaller ones cost more but they do. I had to use a fue of the half blocks so it was not to bad.

Labor. The material is waste. Takes twice as much labor to get rid of the same amount of waste concrete.

That was an awesome project to undertake! You have a lot of talent and smarts to pull that off as beautifully as you did! Your landscaping makes my efforts look pretty lame, too! Thanks for posting. Steve K.
 
Wow, nice work Clint (and friend)! Great looking results. You get the idea of the 'mushroom theory', everything takes longer (and costs more) than whatever you thought it would.

Guess you have an appreciation of how much work went into building Ft Adams out of granite now. No old Ford backhoes in the 1840s. Dang walls are still straight as an arrow too.
 
Thanks Clint for the price info. It's actually a good deal for what they will do. I guess with as many as you brought in a big rig brought them in on a flat deck trailer. That's a lot of weight for sure.
 
Probably a lot cheaper than formed and poured concrete. Plus they don't spoil waiting to be sold. Looks great. I've been moving precast sidewalk around here, one more to place in front of the garage. One of my pieces is in it's 5th setting since it was liquid. BTW, This summer I was able to snag two (pickup) loads of redi-mix for a catch basin down on the corner of the property. I love free concrete, but you have to plan ahead and be ready when it shows up.
