Transmission Inspection
Pulled off the transmission cover today and there is no apparent damage to any gears or the rails. The forks were a little loose so I tightened them up, but they still have a little slop in them, not much, but enough to make me ask how much there should be. I am hearing a loud grinding/clicking noise in 1st/R, but not in 2nd/3rd. What else can I look for/check on while I am in there? Thanks guys, Josh

hello from the deep south. i had a loud clicking noise in 1st and in reverse only . the 1st/reverse slider gear had a missing tooth(broken off ). i had a hard time finding it, i bought a little mechanics "mirror" to look at the teeth on the gear directly under the shifting fork( that gear cannot be seen except with the mirror) . one possiblity . coppersmythe..........................................ps: if that is the problem, it does require splitting the tractor, which is not as hard as it seems, with the right equipment. a cub-fest is a great place to do it with good help/experienced folks for the first time.

thanks for the tip, i will get a mirror and look at that gear. if that us the problem, how long does it have before something else fails or i have a much bigger issue. Basically i am asking if it would be ok to run it with a broken tooth for the winter.

you should not run it any more till ya get it fixed--1st and reverse gear is one of the smaller gears in the tranny and takes alot of the pressure- only like 13 teeth on it-not that hard to split the tractor especially at a cubfest

I likewise have a clicking in first and reverse. I pulled the shifter cover off and looked at the gears as they turned over, but I couldn't see any damage. I have a feeling that I may not have seen the smaller gear. Specifically, where do I look? Do I need to drain the gear oil in order to see it? Thanks.

good morning from the deep south. no need to drain the gear oil. the 1st/reverse slider gear is under one of the two shifting forks,cant for the moment remember which one. its almost completely covered, so a mirror ( small, on the end of a stick) is needed. if the clicking is not too bad, it could be a chipped tooth, or a louder noise like mine, a tooth gone. i'm thinking its the fork on the right side of the tranny, if you were sitting on the seat, driving the tractor . i split mine on my own for the first time, but i do have a concrete floor,a little hoist, and out of the weather. the splitting stands ( i made one, a life saver) some of these guys have made are invaluable for a one man job. if possible, a cub fest ( bad time of the year) or someone close to help that has done it before is ideal . coppersmythe....................................ps: the mirror i bought from sears telecopes like the old car antennas, and about as big around as a quarter, any auto zone,pepboys should have them, or steal a little make up mirror from your wife

And a good morning to you, Coppersmythe, from the not quite so deep South. Thanks for the info. I have a dental mirror that I can use for an inspection. I'll take the shift lever off and have another look today. I am hoping that the problem is not so serious as to require repair, as I was planning on towing the Cub back to my farm in Bay Springs for Thanksgiving. I can put up with the noise, but I do not want it to cause additional damage by driving the tractor.

It sure would have been easier to inspect the first/reverse gear if I had someone to roll the engine over as I looked into my mirror one tooth at a time. I ended up turning it over by prying the upper gear with a screwdriver, tooth by tooth. That is a slow way to turn over the engine. Well I was unable to see any chips or unusual wear on that gear. Are there any other suggestions as to what might cause a pronounced click as I operate the tractor in either first or reverse??

sometimes a loose wheel shucking on the wheel center will make a similar noise. you might want to be sure all 4 lugs are tight on both wheels.

To follow up on Art's post, there are potentially 13 bolts on each rear wheel. Five that hold the center to the hub, four that hold the rim to the center and four that hold the wheel weight on (if installed). Make sure they are all tight on each rear wheel.

i have had some loose bolts on one of my tractors rims. as suggested above, check all of the bolts on the rear rims/hubs. but if the clicking is very "regular" , ( hard to describe the different sound) and almost like a metronome (?) , as the ground speed changes, gear tooth issues would be at the top of the list . hope for the loose rim bolts, MUCH easier remedy ! coppersmythe...........................................................

I think that since I hear the noise only in first and reverse gears, with no noise while in 2nd or 3rd gears, it indicates an issue within the transmission.
