Re: iPad
You are just living to fancy Dan. The most mobile computer I have is a 5 year old laptop my son gave me. I think a lot of my reluctance to get a smart phone, or any kind of tablet is the fact that the last few years at work I had to carry a laptop with me, and spent a good bit of my day on it. They were very useful for maintaining customer equipment, but nearly a third of my time was spent doing company paperwork that had been dumped on the technicians by other departments that were trying to save money. It took them several years to realize they were paying the switching technicians more to do it than they had been the clerks. Of course the fact that I am a cheapskate may have something to do with not wanting the fancy stuff, plus I am notoriously hard on cell phones, I just can't see one of those smart phones lasting more than a month or 2 hanging on my belt in the shop. The fact that my eyes are getting a little old may also effect my decision, I would need a smart phone for each eye like a pair of glasses.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: iPad
Dan:
I have never been an Apple fan at all. My eldest daughter has an Iphone and although she doesn't mind it, she has said she would not buy another one. I like my Blackberry Curve. It is a smart phone, does all I want it to do, doesn't have a touch screen which I prefer and although I can surf the web I really don't. I use my phone for emails, some specific data transfer, contacts/phone book but most importantly for my books that I read while waiting for doctors, dentist, auto mechanics etc., and that is about it. If I am traveling we have a number of laptops to choose from - all wifi. I don't understand the need for a tablet ... but oh well different strokes as they say. The last Mac I owned was almost 20 years ago and I doubt I would own one again unless it was given to me to play with.

Know what you mean. I have a 15 year or so old IBM Think Pad that is absolutely bullet proof. Only problem is it takes 1/2 hour to warm up.

I'm interested to hear Dan's response. I've never had a minute's trouble with mine.

Our church has one. Awkward, it is like driving a right-hand drive car.

Re: iPad
The first i pad was purchased the day before Thanksgiving. Also a padded case. From the start it had program problems. Sometimes it would not connect with Verizon 3G. Often lost passwords. In the middle of writing it would just drop the page. Sometimes it would not connect to a certain web page. The list of little things go on and on. Apple tried several times to fix it from a PC. Each time it would be OK for a few days. Problems continued and Apple agreed to look at it. It went to California and promptly returned with a note saying it met Apple's specs. Problems continued and Apple agreed to replace it if I bought their extended warranty. I did and they sent me #2. OK for a few months. Then sitting at the desk reading I saw a small crack starting in the upper right hand corner. Over the next hour the crack got worse and two more started. Apple said cracks were not covered under warranty but they would look at it. I sent it in and got #3 four days later. I could not load the backup but Apple fixed that over the phone via the PC. Many hours on the phone on hold and many technicians and supervisors later here I am again. We'll see.
