My Winter Project...7 new pics

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

My Winter Project...7 new pics

Postby Marion(57 Loboy) » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:18 pm

...which is also a New Years Resolution, is to:

-get all my tools organized.
-organize all my hardware/parts.
-NOT add ANY new projects until this is done.
-finish all my UNfinished projects.

This is a task of colossal proportion.
This stuff is in total disarray, and in two places...the garage and the shed.
I'm working in the garage 1st, then to the shed.
There's limited room both places, so I need to get rid of everything I don't need.
Been working some at it most everyday since after the new year.
Working 56hrs/6days leaves just a little time each day, but I try to do SOMETHING each day.
Sorry, no 'before' pics  ...just trust me...it's messy!
I will post some pics of marked achievements as they come.

Good luck Marion. I always keep both shops clear of clutter, and projects done. I try and only have one or two projects going at one time. After living with my dad and seeing his 50 projects going on for years and never getting anything done, and have a mess of a shop, i learned what not to do. But when i do make a project, i go out of my way, making a big mess. THat way i spend some quality time "cleaning" my shop. That would my mediation time. :)

I don't really have a lot of junk that needs thrown away, I just have years and years of little projects (mostly mine) that kept getting put on the back burner.
I do procrastinate on my projects, but what's worse is I'll drop whatever I'm into to help someone else finish their project, and mine never get done.
The other thing is, I tended to just leave my tools out when I was done with whatever I was working on simply because there is no real place to put them away.
Well, no more! I'm finishing my work first this time, with little exception.
There for a while it looked messier cleaning it up, but it's starting to turn around now.
I've finished dozens of little projects so far since the 1st of the year.
When I'm done in the garage, then it's time to get started on the 11x16 shed.
Plans there include expanding it to 15x20, the goal is to have nothing "workshop" in the garage.
Although the compressor will most likely be in the garage, and a run of pipe to the shed for air.
Sooo, the theory is...when I am done organizing this stuff, I will also be done with the huge backlog of projects!
TADA! Instant spare time to do more stuff efficiently!

Marion:

That is a nice winter project. Hope you can get it all done.

Organizing my shops has been a lifetime challenge. No way I could ever get it done in one season.

Keep posting your progress and show us pics of your spaces as they get done.

Okay...finally getting somewhere in the garage.
The pics are of the shopsmith main unit; the back wall that I utilized for hanging some things up; the top of the workbench(which you could NOT see when I started); The shelves open/closed; and then the bottom storage open/closed.
The garage isn't totally cleaned yet, but I see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel !

Well, what was a mass of stuff piled and crammed into 1/2 of the garage is getting reduced down. You couldn't even see most of this wall the beginning of the year.
Image

This pic shows where a central vac was mounted...see the dirty spot near the ceiling?
Image

Here is the vac mounted where we wanted it...out of the way! Had to tear out the drywall; run wiring; add workboxes, switches and outlets; cut the plywood and install that; then mount the vac and run the vent. This particular model must vent to outdoors...who knew!
Got it for $50 on craigslist.
Image

1st fitting is a 90degree street ell, then down the wall with straight pipe.
Image

Then at the bottom, a 45degree street ell, and a flexible coupling fastened securely to the ell, and the open end clamp is just tight enough for the end of the hose to twist on and hold while we vacuum out the vehicles.
Image

This pic shows the hose on for vacuuming.
Image

Lastly for now is the vent for the vac.
Image

Still working at it as best I can with all the work hours and some health issues around here...the hose and attachment caddy gets moved to the other side of the garage door when I clean that off...don't ask!

Looking good. Keep going!!

Sorry to be nosy, but nice pair of Delta RAS (floor and counter) and nice Craftsman 100 TS with stand. :D

Here's a Craftsman 100 I redid for my son-in-law (marriage gift to my daughter):

The vacuum works great, and keeps the house vacuum outta the garage and off the concrete driveway.
Sharp eye there to recognize the craftsman tablesaw. I saw it on a tree lawn one day 20 yrs ago or more. Stand, 2 extensions, fence, 2 saw blade inserts, but no miter. The guy came out and helped me load it up to haul it away! He said it wouldn't cut thru anything....well....DUH! It had a 1/4hp 1740rpm motor on it and a dull as all get out plain steel blade. I got a brand new motor, couple of delta miters, trued up the trunions, new blade arbor bearings, made new blade stabilizer washers since they were missing, and I've been using it ever since with B&D Piranha blades. How did you get that one of yours looking so shiny?
The RAS on the floor(it's on two dollies really), is a resoration project I picked up but havent had time to complete yet. The other one in the corner is not in nearly as good a shape, but had the stand. I got it for even less than I got the other one for. The motor runs, and I hope serves as a template for re-wiring my other one correctly, then I'll stick that one on the stand and sell the one I don't need. When I get the one I want running properly, I'll be back on here to get tips on fabbing my ras fence.

Stanton:

Wow! Now that is a really nice restore .. and that quartet is really something. You are running down my alley now. I love my older tools and anything that would suit my cabinet shop gets my interest which your craftsman tools did. :D Very nicely done :applause:, very nice indeed.

Marion:

I hope you are able to get your antique tools done up nice too. Have a feeling you will enjoy then.

I am hoping that I will be feeling a bit better in a few weeks, spring is almost here so maybe I can start on redoing the floor in my cabinet shop and then all the new built-in stations for my tools which of course means new tables etc...

Thank you both for a nice thread ... getting me itchy which is a good thing :{_}:
