super C battery
I recently picked up a 1952 super C and the PO had put a new 6 volt battery on it. My question is this, does positive post go to the starter or the frame? Right now it goes to the starter. It starts and runs well but the meter pointer is to the left of zero instead of to the right. If i switch the battery terminals the meter pulses to the left of zero. If i start the tractor and disconect the battery leed the tractor stays running. The tractor will start bothways with the battery hook up positive ground or negitive ground. I thought these tractors were positive ground?

Re: super C battery
6 volt systems from IH were positive ground from the factory. Install your battery with the positive terminal to ground and re-polarize your generator and see if that doesn't take care of things.

Ok I did that. My volt meter has stoped pulsing. I think I have a regulator problem now. It is showing -3 when I pull out the ignition button and when I start the engine it reads 0. I know the generator is making power because when I disconected the battery cable the engine stayed running.

Re: super C battery
Put a volt meter across the battery with the engine running. If it reads 6.5 to 7.5 volts, you're OK. Regulator voltage can be adjusted, but most regulators covers are riveted closed now days.
I assume the -3 and 0 are on your ampmeter.

Re: super C battery
When you are checking for charging, what RPM is the engine at? You need to be above low idle.
If your new battery is fully charged, you're not likely to show a charge. Turn on the lights and see what happens.

Yep you were right the meter reads amps not volts. What amp range should the meter read? the most it would go up to is two amps. I tried to clean the contacts on the regulator and then it read 0 amps. My volt meter was showing about 6.18 volts while running at high idel.

Re: super C battery
At 6.18 volts it is not charging. I'd try another quick polarization and if that doesn't do it ground the F terminal of the generator to bypass the regulator and see if it charges. That will tell you whether the problem is likely the regulator or generator.

Re: super C battery
I re polerized the generator, that did not work. I started the tractor and disconected the battery and checked the voltage off the generator. I got 5.13 volts so I would say the generator needs some atention.

Re: super C battery
Got up this morning and started messing with the SC generator. I started the tractor and pushed on the brushes with a piece of rubber I had laying around, checked the voltage with the ground disconected and it was putting out 7.3 volts. So I figure I should replace the old brushes with new ones. When I do this is there any kind of adjustments that need to be made or is it just a parts swap out? I will be replacing the bearing and bushing also so it will be a total dissasembly and thurough cleaning too. Should I leave the field coils undisturbed? I dont see any reason why i should need to remove them.

Re: super C battery
Did the voltage drop when you removed the pressure from the brushes? It could just be that the brushes are glazed over. In any case I generally apply a slight pressure on new brushes to help seat them to the commutator.
In any case new brushes are a modest investment and most likely past due anyway.

Re: super C battery
I was reviewing these older posts and came across this one that i did not post the fix to the problem. I fixed the problem by adjusting the fan. like the cub you have to loosen the fan an raise it up and retighten it so all the slack is out of the belt for the generator. that was the problem. Now I have good charging.
