Calling all the carb experts

Postby Mr E » Tue Dec 27, 2011 4:57 pm

My Case VAC has a Marvel-Schebler carb on it. Thanks to the gas we get today, I got some debris from a piece of rubber hose in the carb. (or at least I think that was it). It would barely run with the choke all the way out.

So, today I pull it off the tractor. Gave it a thorough cleaning and put it back together. Installed on tractor. At top speed, it runs great, but if you slow tractor to an idle, then gas literally pours out the carb.

No problem, I'll open her up and adjust the float. Well, to make a long story short, after opening the carb 4 times, now I'm not getting any gas at all. Thought the needle valve was sticking, but it seems to be free. Guess I have decided I don't know how to adjust the float correctly.

Any words of wisdom will be much appreciated. :lost:

Roy, Is there a model # on the carburetor?

I have not been able to find one, Bob. It has Marvel Schebler on both sides of the bowl, but that is all I have been able to find so far.

Roy, Here's a link to the Carburetor Shop: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carburetor_ID.htm There is a section on how to identify your carburetor. I have a brief manual that gives settings for the DLTX and TSX if yours would be either of those models. I'll keep looking.

Bob

Edit: it looks like it may have a TSX: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/TrackitsC.htm#TracCase Confirm that and let me know. :D

Bob,
Just looking at the documentation, I'd have to agree with the TSX.

I wonder how you determine for sure looking at the carb? I looked it over pretty close, but I'll take another look-see in the morning.

Thanks so much for you efforts!

Roy, This manual says: Set floats 1/4" from gasket face to nearest edge of float, keeping edge of float parallel with with gasket. Adjust by using bending tool #M-8.

Replace the rubber fuel line hose.

It's a very long story - but had similiar problem on a Farmall "H". If not the fuel line hose, start checking for the stoppage at the fuel tank.

Test the needle valve and seat for leakage by setting the carburetor top upside down on the bench. Plastic hose to carb inlet. Fill the elevated plastic hose with rubbing alcohol.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I agree with replacing the rubber line for 2 reasons....One; possible fire hazard. Two; A lot of todays fuel has ethanol added to it. While todays vehicles do have the proper hoses and such to handle the ethanol, older rubber did not and will break down and you'll get small pieces of rubber breaking off and finding its way into the carb.

Bob,
Thanks for your assistance and the link to the manuals. She lives!! I think I still need to put a new kit in it, but she does run now. I will replace the rubber line as Eugene recommended, also.

Thanks again, pal.

I need to order a kit for a JD TSX 819. My search pulled up the outfit that Bob linked above.

Bob, have you dealt with this company before? I'm looking for input before sending them the $$

Thanks!

John,
Check with Steiner's, as well. I didn't buy a kit, but they did have one for my carb.
