Avatars for Dummies
How do you take a regular sized picture, say a 640x480, and get it to where you can use it as an avitar?? I have tried re-sizing and it still won't go. What I need is a step-by-step for "dummies!"
thanks,
Al

Re: Avatars for Dummies
The first step is to resize the pic. If the filesize Is over 2 kb you'll have to reduce the quality too. I'm at work and not near a computer so I can't give you better instructions than that. When I get home I'll be more helpful!

You have to open the photo in some type of software that will allow you to resize it. If you open the photo in Windows Photo Viewer, it does not allow you to resize it directly. However, it gives you the option to "OPEN WITH" other software that is available on your machine. As a minimum I would think you probably have Windows Paint, which allows you to resize the photo, and then save it. If you have Microsoft Office on your computer, you can open with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, which is pretty good and a little more user friendly. Good Luck.

I have tried Office Picture Manager, but it won't "compress" when I tell it to. Just sits there.

Microsoft PowerToys has an image resizer. Free download.

If all else fails, email me the image you want to use.

Re: Avatars for Dummies
Have you tried to resize (instead of compress) the photo in Office Picture Manager? This allows you to select the exact size in pixels that you desire. After resizing, check the file size in bytes, also. If the photo is less than 2 kb, you should be good to go with your new Avatar.

YEs, I tried that. File is still way too big.
Don, I have Windows 7 and it says the PowerToys resizer isn't compatible.

What size did you reduce it to? Sometimes, you have to make it smaller than 120 x 120 pixels, because it is too big in kilobytes. It probably depends on the resolution that your camera used to take the photo. Maybe try 60 x 60 pixels. Something's gotta work.

Re: Avatars for Dummies
60x86 pixels is still almost 21 K.
I can't understand why Picture Manager won't compress it.

There is an image resizer clone for Windows 7:

Irfanview is a complete photo manipulation software that will allow you to control image size and quality so you can reduce the image down and gradually decrease image quality until you get it below 2 kb.

Re: Avatars for Dummies
It is really easy to resize using the version of Paint that comes with Windows 7. Be sure to save as a jpeg.
