HELP! Removing a c22 PTO pulley.

Postby Dualing Cubs » Sat Sep 17, 2011 5:10 pm

Right now my father and I are trying to pull off the drive pulley off the PTO for a C22 sickle bar mower. I have a pulley or "hub" puller but it will not pull off and the pulley is cast which lead to us breaking a section of pulley off while using the puller. The set screw is out but the pulley won't budge! Please help! I have read all of the manuals and searched but found nothing specific to this.

First, check inside the pulley itself and inspect the end of the pto shaft itself. I ran into the same issue. Mine was welded to the end of the pto shaft inside the pulley itself. If you've already damaged the pulley, use some heat. If you don't have a welding torch, use a sodering torch and have patience. Get a fair amount of heat to it, actullay drive it onto the shaft a bit to loosen it up, and then try to pull it off. If it does not come off, you will probably take less time in pulling the pto assembly out of the tractor itself and getting it off from there. If you have not done this before, be aware of the shifting coller on the end of the shaft in the tranny. I've had them fall off into the bottom of the tranny. Last option, buy a used assembly to replace it.

Got it! Thanks for the info. I used a high power heat gun and slowly pulled it off ... When I say slow I mean 30 mins of turning slow. It finally came off though. Someone had not replaced the pin in the shaft that sets the pulley in position and then they drove it on as far as they could so it was press fit on there farther than it should have been. Now I will try to braze the pulley back together from where it broke and use it as a last resort if I can't find the same pulley to buy.

I took the pulley to work with me today and brazed it with a tig torche using the solicon bronze rod. It will work fine now so we can put the c22 back on to cut my fields that have grown up again. Once the hurricane took down seven trees, cutting the grass was the last of my worries.

I can also buy a new pulley from case for around $122.00

Put the pulley back on 2 days ago with the c22 and it works great. Gotta love welding :)

Dueling Cubs, can you tell me, is the pulley pressed onto the shaft or is it threaded? Mine has a hex-shaped hub. I know this is post but was hoping to get some help

I believe you are referring to a different pulley than Dualing Cubs?

That pulley is threaded, LEFT hand thread, if its the one I think you're referring to. Ed

All the pulleys that fit on the shaft have keyways to fit on the splined shaft . Is that what you needed to know?

Boy did that story sound familiar...Mine didn't end as well as my pulley was toast after the "removal" ...I ended up putting a new shaft as well  ....122.00 for a pulley...Who'd a thunk it....Really have no need for the C-22 so I never bought another pulley...Glad you had a successful ending.....Dave
