"Final" Assembly Fest!!

Postby Dale Finch » Fri Sep 09, 2011 10:59 pm

Anyone interested in coming to Chapel Hill next week to help me remove the Right Final to replace the seals? That and the transmission were the only things (oh, and the engine) that I did not completely dismantle, and when I refilled the transmission with gear oil, it had a VERY slight drip coming out the hole on the bottom of the Differential Shaft Housing. If the tractor were in use, I would ignore it...a drop or two per day? No problem! But it is in a nice clean shop with concrete floors, hoist, etc. I vascillated back and forth and finally decided I WILL take it back apart to do it right. I will check the brake at the same time and then will know for sure everything is right.

So, party will begin when I get the seals. Let me know if you are interested! :{_}:

I would love to watch somebody take the left final apart. My Super A (I guess I have to clarify now that I have 3--my grandfather's tractor, the restored one) has some dreaded wheel wobble--I farmed this one out and the guy apparently didn't do a very good job.....

When this happens you can grab hold of the top of the tire on the LH side and rock the tire back and forth. Worst case scenario is the bearing race is turning in the final drive housing. Could be wear in the steel sleeve between the inner and outer bearings. Common problem on A-140's. Happens on the left side, I assume because of everything being offset to the right. The man that repaired it claimed to have fixed it "right" but the housing will probably have to be built up and machined back down, or knurled where the bearings go in, so they won't slip.

Did it have the same wobble before it was "fixed"?

Yes. If they have a lot of hours on them, they usually will wobble some. THis one is bad enough now it's "rocking" the inner seal in and out of the housing. Pretty sure this is an example of being better off if I had done the repair myself....

Wheel wobble and steering play are the first things to check....and usually the right hand brake is wore out too!

The right brake pedal is a dead give away, If it has a lot of side play in it look out , the rest of the tractor is in about the same condition. The wear comes from turning right at the end of rows. Takes a lot of turns to cultivate a crop of bacca
