W4-Flooding when starting

Postby DelValCub » Sun Jul 24, 2011 3:10 pm

The McCormick Deering W4 I have must be flooded in order to start every time I use it. I have to leave the choke closed and crank it for 10 sec, then let the flooded carb drain off excess fuel and then after taking the choke off it will then start and stay running. This is the only way it will start. Does anybody have any advice as to what is wrong? Any help you be greatly appreciated.

First thing I'd be looking for is a vacuum leak from bad gaskets or a damaged intake manifold. Poor compression and valves that are out of adjustment or burned are other possibilities.

I will definitely look into what you mentioned. It also sputters and pops when I rapidly throttle up. Not sure if the same issue is causing both problems. Only positive side is that it never smokes or burns any oil. Thanks for the reply.

Run a compression test, a leaking intake valve can cause all the symptoms you've mentioned.
