Leroy - we have several regulars out for Red Power Roundup. I may take some time to get an answer. I believe you will have to press the axle out if it is like the cub. You may be able to do the job without pulling the final but you will have to remove the pan and when the axle is free you will need to watch for shims falling out. You will have to keep track of which side they came from and get them back in the right place.

Leroy68, I am in the process of restoring my '48 SA, and although I DID remove the final to rebuild it, you can change the seal without doing so. I just reviewed the photos I took to refresh my memory. One thing, though, as Bigdog mentioned, you must be very careful as you remove the axle, to catch and TRY to make sure you see the location & orientation of the spacers/washers that come out. I haven't gotten my SA running again, so I am ASSUMING I have them back together correctly. The bull gear is heavy, and will drop out fast. I suggest you have a few extra hands to help ease it down so you can slide those spacers out slowly. As for the axle, it comes out easily. Take photos!!!

Although these photos are out of order, they may help you:

This is the link to the SA Parts Manual and the Final Drive is pg. 172
http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Super%20A%20-%20Super%20AV/index.html

As for the seal, it is behind the bearing (#25) inside the retainer (#29), and I had to use a press to remove it. That required building up blocks to hold the axle so it would clear the press when I pressed it out.

You will need to replace items #19, 26, 27, & 28. Be careful when installing the new seal, so as NOT to let the lip curl under. The old one I took out appeared to have been poorly installed:

I'm sure as folks return from Red Power, you will get better, more informed information! Good luck and have fun!

I may not be understanding your question...also, I may not be using the right terminology. First, using the term "FINAL", I am thinking the entire "Rear Axle Housing" (#7 page 172). (Others may be referring to a different part??) I thought you did not want to remove the final from the tractor. If that IS what you are asking about, you simply remove the six 7/16 screws holding it to the transmission housing. The differential shaft then slides right out (I used an engine hoist to hold it). You can now replace the Differential Oil Seal if needed (#26 page 169).

The photos I attached earlier were for replacing the Rear Axle Oil Seal (#26 page 172). Does that make any sense? And does that answer your question?

housing off axle out and if its as hard to get back in as it was to get out whewwww. outside bearing looks good but came off by hand Im thinking thats not good. bearing on inner side is sealed with o-ring around outside. Would you change bearings while it was torn apart? The inner bearing does not slide easily onto the end of the axle which makes me think its going to be a booger to get back in any hints would be appreciated

Once again, I am having a hard time picturing your situation...for example, I don't remember any o-ring around the bearing. Could you mean some of the pieces of the old seal? It had a spring as part of the seal itself. Although I did replace all seals and gaskets, all I did to the bearings was flush them with carb cleaner (or brake cleaner?) until they ran clean, then reoiled them (90 gear oil) and reinstalled them.

As for the outside bearing, as you can tell from the photos, I had to use a press to get mine off, but I don't know enough to advise you on your "loose" fitting. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will chime in. Also, let me make sure your "inside" and "outside" are the same as mine. The outside bearing I am talking about is #25 on page172 http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Super%20A%20-%20Super%20AV/TC-39B%20Parts%20Catalog/index.html

I certainly hope someone with more experience will help out, but if there is anything else that I can do, or more photos, let me know. Good luck.

Yes that is what i call the outside bearing the inside on mine has a rubber o-ring around the outside and is a sealed bearing not like the outside bearing. I had a devil of a time getting the axle out of i was beginning to think i was gonna have to find a press to get it out not looking foward to putting it back.

OK...Yeah it only took a few wacks to get my axle out and the bearing went fairly easily. Going back in it went OK, but it was a bit tricky getting the spacers in place.

Is the inside bearing usually tapered? this one is guess that is why it gave me fits getting the axle out
