Homemade exhaust pipe tap

Postby Winfield Dave » Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:11 pm

I thought Snow White's exhaust manifold was stripped out because the pipe was loose, just sitting in there.
Couldn't see it very well with the hood on, Sooooooo..........
I pulled the hood off [I know - don't do it  ]

and found out that a previous pipe must have been rusted in there and when the previous owner removed it, they didn't get it all out of the threads.

Don't have a pipe tap for that size [yet] so I made one up real quick from a piece of 1" pipe.
Chased the threads, and the exhaust pipe screws in just fine now.

Well, the hood went on rather quickly :D ...but not till after:
-cleaned breather tube
-oiled generator
-new sediment bowl screen and gasket
-adjusted both belts
-checked wiring hookups behind the dash

Then once the hood was back on, it was time to make a new gas line.
And a big thank you to Bill Hudson for the fittings he sent me a while back.

Dave,

The gas line looks good. Certainly my pleasure to help out.

Nice job Dave! I had a rough time with iCub's exhaust pipe. I coated the new one with anti-seize... not that I'm planning on removing it anytime soon. It would be nice to get another 50 years out of it. :)

Glad you were able to get the hood back on real quick, too! :)
