New 154 owner

Postby rbicomp14 » Wed May 04, 2011 9:08 pm

Greetings. My name is Rob from New Bern, NC(coastal NC). I have 5 acres and finally broke down to the pressure from my brother in law to buy a tractor to cut my grass. I found a 1969 Cub Lo-Boy for sale by the original owner, a late 60's lady. I've just gotten to use it once, but it sure cuts well and dropped my mowing time almost in half.

Here are a couple of photos.

the tractor works well. there are a number of small issues that i will need to work thru. the float pin in the carb need repair it seems. there is a fuel shut off valve on the line. it works well enough to choke the tractor into shutdown but not well enough. there's still a fuel leak after shutoff.

anyone have a fresh carb they want to sell?

none of the lights work and though, i dont need them, i will want to get them fixed. you notice that it has an odd homemade bumper on the front. i'll need a complete front cover to restore that. elsewhere the tractor has been completely covered in black crud. exhaust and so forth. its been that way a long time i would guess. the paint undernieth is remarkably preserved as i work my way thru it.

Rob:

HamiltonBob on :eBay: is a reliable/trustworthy supplier of good used Number Series Cub Parts. So check with him to see if he has what you need. The fuel leaking problem seems to be normal no matter what Cub one has. I am assuming that you have a Zenith carb on the 154 if it is original. Suggest you check with the following resources - they are linked in the welcome text I posted above.

Cub 154 Lo-Boy - Owner's Manual and the TC-131 Parts Catalog Revision 8. Don't have an IH Service Manual but the IH-38 1974 Edition Complete can be useful.

As for the fuel leaking problems this article in the CBoK may be of use - How To Upgrade A Cub Fuel System. Although the article pertains to a standard Cub, much of it will apply to your Lo-Boy. Clean tank, good clean fuel sediment bowl and a proper fuel line will work wonders. In-line fuel filters in gravity fed systems can be problematic for many even though in some cases they seem to work. Usually in-line fuel filters tend to create fuel starvation issues. Here is the breakdown of a Cub-154 Fuel System:

I live just up the road from you in Kinston and will be glad to help if you need it. The carburetors are easy to rebuild with the kit from Steiners.
The homemade front bumper was probably made to protect the fiberglas grill, which is easy to damage. Those grills are hard to find and very expensive so take good care of it!
I have the 185 model and it's a great mowing machine. I also cut about 5 acres each week and I like the comfortable ride, especially on rough ground. Having large diameter tires makes the ride a lot smoother than the typical Cub Cadet or Zero Turn machines.
Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of very smart people on here that can probably answer any questions you have.

I have the same tractor and echo the sentiments already posted. Especially concerning the front grill. 8) Welcome to the forum.

thanks for the feedback. bad news on the grill. what you can see of it in that photo
is really all there is of it. the fabbed lower cover and the aluminum sheet across the grill
doesn't cover any of the grill. its missing behind that. if i wanted to bring it back to original
i'd have to get fresh pieces.

the tractor came with the original manual for both the tractor and the mower. so, i dont need
to download that stuff.

questions. is there a blade to keep a gravel driveway smooth for this vehicle? is there a front end loader
or a trailer/dump box that hitches to the ball in back?

Rob:

The links I posted would have led you to the IH 54 Blade.

There are a number of other implements that can be perused in the TC-131 Parts Catalog Revision 8. We try to answer all the questions as best we can, but we cannot anticipate all the different permutations and have to rely on those asking the questions to follow the links in replies. The Owner's Manual is useful, but the Parts Catalog is really something that everyone should be familiar with just as the Service Manuals. They actually can answer a lot of questions that one may have.

You might want to check out Hamilton Bob on :eBay:, he specializes in Numbered Series Cubs and mostly 154's from what I have seen. He may be able to source a grille for you.
