missing data plate

Postby 100series » Sat Mar 26, 2011 4:11 pm

Without the chassis data plate can the engine serial number be used to find year model. It's a 140 with engine serial number 89746. Thanks

The engine serial number might get you close. The casting codes in the major cast iron components will also give you a good idea. The casting codes are explained and there is a chart on the TM Tractor website.

This number is not a casting number, it's stamped on a machined surface behind the coil on the block.

That casting number chart on TM's site is for cubs, I wonder if it will work for a 140?

That engine probably went into a new tractor in January 1961. You will probably find late 1960 date codes.

Something to look at, because I've made this mistake before. The stamped serial number tag on a Super A is actually under the seat, on one of the seat posts, NOT up front on the bolster like on the CUB. I'm not sure about the 100, 130, 140, but I'm assuming it is the same. You may want to do a double check to see if it's there. I recently looked at two Super A tractors that the owner didn't know where the serial number plate was.

All my 100's (3), my 200 and my Super A have a data plate with ser. # riveted to the clutch housing on the left side of tractor. But I will look where you said. The block casting is so bad that the date code is not visible. You can barely read the firing order. It's not my tractor. It's a friend of mine who is selling it and he figured he would need to know the year model to do so. Thanks you everyone for your help. I'm going with 1961 as Mr. Jim suggested.

No, you are correct. I was thinking Super A tractors, but a 140 had the serial plate riveted to the clutch housing:

http://www.batescorp.com/cart/index.php ... page_id=11
Except where indicated, serial # name plate is found on left or right side of transmission housing or clutch housing. Serial number listed is the beginning one for that year.

I know the couple of Super A tractors that I had the serial number plate was riveted to the inside of the left seat support.

Thanks,
Bill
