removal of transmission input shaft 154 lo boy

Postby JGtools » Thu Mar 10, 2011 5:32 pm

decided to remove the bad input shaft, Clutch and sheet metal was already off . Next I removed top gear shift lever and cover (8) bolts exposing the shifter forks, rods input shaft and gears.see pic 1. Next i removed rear differential cover (9) bolts ,exposing the rear of the input shaft and left and right shifter rods.see. pic 2 Next I removed the 2 shifter fork set screws/bolts, make sure you are in neutral first. see pic 3. Next go to rear access of differential housing, and I used a piece of steel rod I had on hand, used a light hammer to drive forward shifter rods, take your time, and tap the rods out, you will drive rods through front of transmission housing, the frost plugs will drive out as rod is moved forward and out of transmission housing, be careful of shifter forks as rods move through and remove forks once rod is clear. Cover rod bores with your hand or have someone assist you, make sure not to lose the spring or ball that seats inside rod bore, as rod exits bore ,the spring and ball may release with enough pressure to go flying if bore is not covered with hand.see pic 4. Next I removed clutch shaft oil seal, and through rear access of differential housing I used the same rod for for tapping out shifter rods,to tap out input shaft. As input shaft is moved forward, slowly tap until shaft has mostly cleared rear needle bearing , be careful not to damage bearing, remove gears as shaft exits transmission housing. see pic 5 and 6 This was my first time removing a input shaft, and the job did not take long, about a 1hour. I did already have sheet metal and clutch removed, or this would have taken a few hours more. Thanks Hamilton Bob for your guidance.

JG,
"Thank You" - VERY MUCH for all the GREAT pictures !!!!

I have been keeping a 'pictionary' of many parts and procedures on the numbered series cubs and this make a very fine addition to the Transmission Maintenance Section.

Thanks again, NJDale

your welcome . I have used pictures that others have posted several times on repairs , and sometimes pictures can make all the difference for a smooth going repair. Jim

JGTools thank you a thousand times over. Have a 154 and needed to replace a shifter fork and didn't know how to get the rods out! Can't state enough how extremely appreciative I am of your post/pictures.

Had the 1st/R gear push out of the shifter fork, the gear pushed itself though and would no longer go into reverse since it had 1/2" extra play in it.
