185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
I bought a 1975 Cub 185. Working on fixing it up. It needed a new throwout bearing. I was able to drive the old bearing off the casting pretty easily. The markings on it say Nice 8088. I tried to find it on the net but wasn't having any luck. Looks like Nice bearings may be out of business. Has any one had any sucess in replacing this bearing and may have a cross reference for another throwout that works? Let me know if you have.

Re: 185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
Nice was bought by RBC bearings. You can send them an email but I expect it is an obsolete bearing. They may give you the specs for the bearing which is really all you need. I took one out a year or so ago but only remember it as a front cased shell with an extended inner race. If nothing else you could measure the old one and spend some time on the Timken and SKF website to find one that would work. This weekend, I may pull the shaft off of my 154 and look at the bearing to see if I can come up with a replacement.

Re: 185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
Thanks for the info. I plan on taking the old bearing and casting to napa or somewhere and see if they can come up with a match. It was really easy to get the old bearings off the casting. What a shame IH doesn't offer to sell the bearing alone without the casting. The price I got from my local IH parts shop was $105. The bearing has to only be a $20 item from a generic supplier. I will let you all know if I have any luck.

Re: 185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
Well...I talked to the local bearing shop. Not good news. He said Nice 8088 is as we all know obsolete. And yes they were bought out by RBC. He tried to cross reverence the dimensions and could not come up with anything he thinks would work as of yet. He said RBC will manufacture it if anyone would want to order 1000 units. RIGHT! I will keep searching and if I come up with anything let you know.

Re: 185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
See hamiltonbobscubs on ebay and he is here too he parts out the 154/184/185's and has good used parts. The throwout bearing i got from him is like new with no play in the bearing at all. Its a choice of going with a new dealer one or one from him in the end.
I would also change out the pressure plate and clutch disc too since its apart. I found the new pressure plate to be at least 50% stronger in spring pressure over a used one.
If you can give me the dimentions of the old throwout bearing let me see if i can cross reference it with one of my bearing houses who deals with bearings only. I can try for you. I also have some industrial connections too. Remember the inside bore dimention and the thickness is what matters to make it work.

Re: 185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
Try doing a search for; Nice 8088 ballbearing / nice 8088 ball bearing
Then try http://locateballbearings.com/ put in the info for a world search for nice 8088
In my quick looksee it sounds like IH used a custom made bearing rather than doing what they do today is to design a product with an off the shelf all ready made part which is cutting costs today rather than design a new one. (old school vs new school)
The only way a throwout bearing wears out is from improper adjustment. We need .090" clearance between the pressure plate fingers to the throwout bearing when the clutch pedal is fully up. At the sametime there should be .010" clearance between the flywheel brake pucks and the flywheel. This allows the flywheel brake to stop the flywheel at the sametime the clutch is released so the shifter can move the gears without grinding. If the thorwout bearing rides on the cluth plate fingers it will turn all the time and wearout sooner than later. Its the sameway with any clutch throwout bearing.

Re: 185 Throw Out Bearing Rebuild
Most of the time, if the bearing is worn out, the retainer probably is too.
HamiltonBobsCubs made it easy to order a new bearing.

For a little more dough, a new retainer can be included as well.
