Re: computer spped
Probably not a bad idea to call them. Sounds like you are not getting nearly as much bandwidth at night as your are during the day. They can check your speed and tell you if you are getting what you are paying for, or not.

How crowded is your network? During peak times, early in the evening and until about 9 the bandwave is shared by more people and things naturally slow down.

Re: computer spped
Depends on what service program you have with your ISP. If you have Lite then that will probably be the best you get. Lite is usually around 1 meg down with 250kb up. Succeeding packages increase speed.
It is not just how many users are online (and user load is a significant speed determinant) but many ISP's use throttles to increase capacity when load limits are approached. Fiber Optics can be a boone in high usage areas but not all jurisdictions have fios yet. Cable can handle a surprising amount of load but T1/T3 lines do have limits as well.

Mike, as Rudi stated, it depends on the service you have purchased. I have ran the test several times, and get different results each time. I have just upgraded my service to 6 MB down, which is the best I can currently get.
The last test I ran showed:
Download 7610

Roy, Rudi, thanks. I think this was about the best i could get combined with our cable TV. Not bad after having dial up for 15 years.

I just tested mine and had this.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Mike:
We have had high speed broadband here for almost almost 10 years now I guess.. I can check, but I moved from NBTel to Rogers because NBTel would not give us ADSL. When we moved to Rogers we had the highest speed package available. Right now I am at 8megs down and 800 up .. but it is 3rd down the list. Haven't gone to the fastest because it is kind of expensive - and they won't open up ports 80 or 8080 for my own in-house server yet. When they do then I will upgrade cause it will be worth it.
Currently there are 6 computers on line (my 3 downstairs doing their thing) Kris's Laptop, Em's Laptop and my Laptop (yup the one I am on now) as well as watching Bruce Almighty on the tube and my speed test says:
Side notes..., here in our jurisdiction it has been a little over 4 years - almost 5 if I remember right that every resident of New Brunswick was guaranteed by law affordable access to the internet and last summer it became law that every customer had to have access to high speed internet. Upgrading is a personal choice, but it is available to everyone. New Brunswick is the only jurisdiction that has this legislation. Personally I think it is the right way to go.. but that is JIMHO - others may not agree and that is fine. But in this day and age, high speed is not only desirable but for those who work at home or wish to work at home it is essential.

Re: computer spped
Dang, Barnyard, that is impressive!! Sure wish I could get that kind of speed.
You know, you would think the upstream side would be a bit higher with that downstream rate.

Re: computer spped
I am retired from the local phone company which used to be owned buy GTE/Verizon, and I guarantee you will not get a straight answer out of them. The local guys will help you all they can, but your problem is out of their hands. Your problem is that they have to many people trying to work on too small a bandwidth further up the pipe, and the people in charge of that will never admit it or do anything about it till enough people complain and start wanting refunds. Check your bandwidth during the early day, of an evening, and late at night. Unfortunately internet access and service is not regulated by the PSC like local telephone service.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

ok my frontier test about 11:30 this morning was 854 and 131 and now at 10:15 it is 691 and 123
Seems to be ok now.. I do know that weather conditions will effect it too ( or mabe because of the weather, more people are using it ? )

Re: computer spped
If you are having issues with speed that don't seem to be getting resolved by power cycling (reboot your modems), call your ISP and they will trouble shoot from their end. Oh this is from another ISP's test site for comparison with the Rogers speed test.
Here is my latest test. Notice this is in Mbps and not KBps ..
It looks like we have modem issues even though this modem is only 2 years old. After recycling for an extended period we were able to bring our download speed beyond what we contract for, but our upload is only 1/3 .. should be 1 mbps down.
