Super A Engine Overhaul

Postby Pabst » Thu Jan 06, 2011 8:08 pm

I my currently in the process of overhauling my Farmall Super A, serial # 258232 and engine part # 251069R1 with no water pump. My question is would there be added benefit to installing a water pump? Thanks, I will follow with pictures shortly :D

I am no expert on these engines but I would think that it would require a lot of the parts to be changed for a water pump to be added. It would also add more parts that will eventually need to be repalced or rebuilt further down the road. The thermo siphon system has worked for these tractors for 60+ years so I wouldn't change it now.

just clean the rust and gunk out of the block after you remove the old sleeves completely. some of the new sleeve kits are coming without enough taper on the sleeve to permit the sleeve to start into the vasoline lubricated o-ring.

if you encounter this problem, look at http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=53998&p=446641&hilit=sleeve+tool#p446641 for an easy solution.

I use Autolite 386. That's a hot plug.

Everything else if you tell them what you are looking for, they should be able to look it up. All are common parts. On the fan belt make sure they know it does not have a water pump. The plug wire set will probably not look original, just make sure they're copper core wires.

I appreciate all the help you guys deliver, thanks! Does the oil pump distribute the oil to the valve tappets or just by splash? When I began my tear down I noticed that the upper portion of the engine was no receiving good lubrication, is there anything I can do now during the overhaul to promote more oil distribution? the super a recieves oil through the rocker arm assy, in the same manner as the rest of the ohv engines.

so if your engine is rusty in the rocker arm assy area, then it has laid around a bit.

if the bottom is good and you need top end parts, i have a rebuilt head, and a rocker arm assy thats not all rusted up.

Artc,

Well, my had some rust but, I just thought this was a sign of not enough oil reaching the top of engine poor oil pressure? I may inquire about your setup. Thanks for your help. Pabst :D

Oil gets to the rocker assembly through a hollow stud at the center rocker shaft support. If somebody replaced the stud with a plain stud or bolt, the top end will get no oil.
