Cod Fishing in Massachusetts

Postby wfmdfm » Wed Apr 21, 2010 7:43 pm

Headed out early today to do some off shore Cod fishing. Headed out at 6am to our destination about 20 miles out just north of Cape Cod. Geat day sunny in the 60's with about 1 ft seas. Landed about 100 fish and were able to keep 30 of them. 24 inch min size to keep them. 3 guys on the boat and a 10 fish limit per fisherman. Lots of marine life in the area, porpoises, whales, seals, etc. Great way to start the fishing season. Lots of fish to fillet but got them done before we returned to the dock.

There are lots of Tuna in the area end of July, August and Sept. I have only fished for the once with no luck. The guy I went out with this week caught 2 last year, one at 175lbs. I have been on the water when they are breaking all over the size of a foot ball field. It is something to see them smashing the bait fish and coming out of the water. I hope to get out this summer. Another week or so and the Striped Bass will be back. They are fun to catch and good eating. I will be in the kayak next week trying my luck with a fly rod.

cool. I've been Bluefinning the winter season down here in NC for over 10 years I plan on bringing the boat up to P-Town on the cape mid august thru the first Sept. fishing the bay & the bank, then will be moving down and fishing out of Chatham, Mass. the rest Sept. and most of Oct more to the south of the cape before we bring the boat back to Cape lookout, NC for the winter season. It will be my first time fishing north of Virgina beach, Va. I've meet some of the nicest (& and some of the best) tuna fisherman from Mass. during our winter season down here and a few have took me under their wing to show me the way above the DMZ.... I guess some of that southern hospitality rubbed off. can't wait to do some chunking and kite fishing for some big uns... trolling all day the way we do here gets old after a while. Here's a really cool vid for all the ones who have never seen these beasts balling bait up in a feeding frenzy.... this is a good friend, Capt. Mark on the Canyon Runner fishing out of Oregon inlet, NC just a couple weeks ago. It was a little bumpy but they were nailing big 60"-70" class fish on top water poppers getting 30+ bites a day. watch close about the 50-55 sec mark.

Nice fishing.

We would go out of Niantic, Ct but it was a longer boat ride to the ocean. Then we went out in Point Judith, RI its a shorter boat ride with more time to fish. I have to get my boys out there again soon.

Too bad we can't get a group of farmall guys out on a party boat to fish for Cod/Blues/pollack/Flounder or what ever else bites.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Let me know when your out this way. I am always ready to go fishing. There are plenty of boats for Cod trips up in MAss and RI. I find April to be the best fishing for Cod and Haddock. This time of year its stripped bass and Blue fish.

Maybe we should get a group of cubbers out fishing?????

When my dad was alive we would go out cod/haddock fishing on every goodfriday wether the weather was good or bad if the captain would go out we would too. I'm trying to get my sons to do the samething maybe next year.

Oneday out of niantic the captian almost beached the boat. He had to turn so hard i thouth we were making a torpedo run. Since then we go out of Point Judith,RI. These guys seem to know what they doing. We hit the mouth of the river in the fog, dead nuts.
