M Starter

Postby Phillip W. Lenke » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:28 am

I recently purchased a Starter for our M, just got it reconditioned and on the tractor.
It has a red tag on it looking at Brillmans Co. site it shows red tags as 12V
I want to keep tractor at 6 volts.
Can or will the starter work on 6 volts will there be enough power to throw the tractor over.
Thanks Phil

Phil, it may have enough oomph to engage the bendix but it won't turn over very fast at all. Hopefully they just tagged it wrong. You'll have to check with whoever reconditioned it.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Won't lose anything by trying. But if it is a 12 volt, you will know quickly. It will act as if the battery is almost dead.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Is it the original Delco red tag? Have a Delco part number on it? If it is a tag from a previous rebuilder, I wouldn't place too much credence on the tag color.

That is the correct part number for the original 6-volt starter on an M. The IH number is 63608D. It was built on March 24 of some year that ends with a 0, probably 1950.
