Gord's Super Farmall H!
Guys..
For those who were here for CubFest Northeast NB 2009, y'all got to see Gord's H that he grew up with. Was his father's. Now it kind of boards here since I actually have some room for the H to play in. Gord is getting it running again. We have had sort of a mini-fest here the last couple days. After watching Cecil, Bob and Dave, I got me some courage, so we are playing. Redid all of the fuel lines as they were primarily copper and a mess at that. Pics in a bit..... So we got the battery in, fluids changed/added/topped up etc., and then we turned it over. Nada, nuddink.. zippo So back to drawing board and check for Fuel, Air, Compression and Spark. Yup, got em all except for mr. Sparky.
Tested the spark with an in-line spark tester and nada.. nothing there. So popped the distributor cap, dry, clean no arcing marks. Took off the rotor and dust cover.. gee that was easy.. and then started to check the points. Manually opened them, they looked ok.. no glazing. So then had Gord turn it over slowly so I could watch the shaft as it brought the lobe up to open the points. Nope.. points no open. Check closely - no gap, go to next lobe - nope no open.
Off the top of me head the number 0.015 seems to ring a bell. Is 0.015 the correct gap for the points in an H with a distributor No service manual.. no owner's manual available that is easily accessible.. so any help is appreciated. I think we got it all covered except for spark. Hoping to get it going tomorrow. Now the Super A well that is a different story....
edit: It has been determined that Gord's tractor is actually a 1947 H and not a Super variant. However, it is still a Super - "H" in my books

Rudi - I think the specs are .013 for an H or .020 for the super H

Thanks I appreciate.
Nudder quick question. What year did the Super H begin production? Early 50's yes? And serial number is where?

Super H's were produced in 53 & 54 only. Serial number tag is on the clutch housing - left side.

.020 Distributor
.013 Magneto.
The .020 gap is pretty standard for most battery operated ignition systems.

Re: Gord's Super Farmall H!
A nice sunny day today great day for some seat time hauling firewood on Ellie and playing with the Super A and the H. More on the Super A later, for now we have news on the H.
Gord was able to come today and we got into the H again. First thing we did was put those wonderful illuminated Spark Plug Wire Testers on the plugs and the wires connected to them. Then Gord finally got the screw for the points loose and I then adjusted the points. 0.020" gap.. a little tug when closed but not a lot. Felt ok. Tried to see if we had spark. -- nada, zilch, zippo, nuddink. No blinkin lights at all. So I took the cap, rotor and dust cover off. Grabbed the point file I have (Em's old emery board ), gave it a few good swipes, blew it out with a bit of air (me) put it all back together again. told Gord give it a whirl.
One or two revolutions and tada she fired... and started But you could hardly tell it was running that engine is so quiet. Blew me away. Anywasy, turned on the gas a bit more and Gord took it for a small spin up to the house - me riding shotgun on the drawbar. Em was quite amazed.. real quiet and not a tiny tractor. I think I have found a new interest... not sure what I would do with something that size, but it is an interesting tractor nonetheless.
Again, I gots to thank Cecil, Dave, Larry and Bob for helping me get me mojo back.. I am enjoying this... this is great

Re: Gord's Super Farmall H!
Glad to see you have your mojo back, I do not think it really ever left maybe it was just dormant for a while. A little encouragement will do wonders for the mojo.
I can not wait for pictures of the H. You had better be careful those H's will grow on you and you will have to expand the storage facilities
Great to hear the old H is alive and kickin

Re: Gord's Super Farmall H!
Guys:
Quick question.. Oh, the H sounds soooooo smooth.. slick engine. Gord says this engine has never been touched... just maintained. Wow
Ok to the question.. what is the proper idle rpm setting for the H We think it is a bit on the high side. Second question.. since I have no manual.. where would the adjustments be? Will check but would this be an IH carb? It looks like it.. does not look like a schleber or a zenith. Possible carter? But seems more than likely an IH.
Pics tonight

Re: Gord's Super Farmall H now with Pics !
Well as promised here are a couple pics of Gord's 1947 H.
Gord and I were playing with the H yesterday and he installed the lift cylinder for the trailing sickle bar mower. Next week we may actually get to play with the mowers...
