Radiator Fan Housing

Postby Bill V in Md » Sat Aug 21, 2004 8:04 am

My '48 Cub does not have a fan housing. Aside from the safety benefit, are there significant advantages in either air flow or cooling that I am missing. Looks like adding oil to the front pulley bearing is more difficult with this housing on. It's funny that you don't see these sold on ebay very often.

If you are talking about the fan shroud they are a must as they make the fan pull 99% of the air thru the rad.
Where as with out one about 75% or less is pulled thru therad.
Tractor or car, truck will run warmer with out one.
If it's been broken I did it.
If its not broken wait till I touch it.

I think they are probably a great help in cooling especially in hot weather under heavy work loads. I would not run without one just for the safety factor reason. There are only 3 at this page but 2 of them are sold with the 3rd on a sale-pending but you might call and tell them you are next in line for one, (MAYBE). http://www.tmtractor.com/co/co_001.htm

They don't make oiling the fan much harder, but as has been pointed out, they definitely increase cooling, and a thermosiphon system like on the cub needs all the radiator cooling it can get. Might try emailing or calling Jamie at http://www.jptractorsalvage.com for one.

Bill,

Yeah, my '49 was missing it's shroud as well, but I was able to order one used, right here in Canada, put it in the de-rusto tank, it painted up nice and I'm sure it makes a diff in air flow, but I bet alot are missing and don't really put the Cub in jeopardy, but you wouldn't want to get your hand in there. :(

That one on eBay has had a section cut out of it for easy removal unless they were made like that for a Lo-Boy model. Should be a complete circle like this one.
