Is John Deeres HY Gard a suitable substitute for differential and trans?
It is a low viscosity trans and differential oil. Thanks, Bob

Hy Tran

Postby Ron » Wed Aug 18, 2004 7:38 am

Hi Bob,

I tried to order some Hy Tran from Columbia Tractor, I/H Case dealer in N.Y.
They could not ship it to me because it is considered hazmat.

He went on to tell me that if I had a John Deere dealer near by that their Hy Guard is the same thing.

I'm not promoting its use one way or another, this is just what I was told by someone at a Case dealership.

HyTran

Is HyTran recommended, or do you guys consider it a *must*?

Is there a clear benefit to using it over normal transmission lubricant, or is that a religious debate I'd rather not start?

Each different hydralic fluid has a rating that refers to it's viscosity, foaming, etc. Hytrans is MS1209. What all that refers to I don't know, but the recomendation is that any fluid used should be MS1209 compliant. Most containers are marked with what they are compatible with. If you want to go to the other extreme, the early touch controls used non detergent mototr oil.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

John, I have an unopened 5-gallon bucket of hydraulic oil that says compliant for I-H with the number (MS1207). The close difference is that mine ends with a 7 instead of 9 on numbers you posted. Do you have any knowledge or opinion on that slight number difference?.

MS1209:
http://www.viscosityoil.com/pdf/P13_24.PDF

MS1207:
http://www.ac-rerefined.com/America_s_Choice_Universal_Tractor_Fluid__FORM_2500_.pdf

The MS1209 is Hy-Tran Ultra. MS1207 is standard Hy-tran. Ultra should substitute for standard hy-tran.

Hy-Tran

I went to local IH dealer and he gave me Kubota Hydraulic oil when I ask for Hy-tran said it was all the same. I have not used it yet, is he right?
