Turf Tires

Postby Holes49 » Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:14 pm

Has anyone switched the front of a Cub for a wider turf tire, these narrow tires tend to chew up the grass on cornering.
Yeah...but think how fast I'll be able to do it the 2nd time !!

Have you tried using the brakes to assist on turns?

I've seen a few, but they were also on different wheels. A 4.80-12 boat trailer tire will fit your wheels and minimize scuffing.
If you are not part of the solution,

Also, if you are using the Cub with a belly mower, wider front tires may rub against the mower in turns. The boat trailer tires that John described are about the best I have found for not marking the dirt..

Turf Tires vs Implement Tires

Postby BIG JOHN » Sun Aug 01, 2004 4:38 pm

I don't know what a turf tire would look like for the front of a cub but I have a Lo-Boy with Turf tires on the rear and Implement Tires on the front and they do not dig in at all. I also have an IA with the same set-up. Both of these tractors are very grass friendly.

Turf Tires

Postby ScottyG » Wed Aug 04, 2004 12:23 pm

I'll go with Big John and other comments above about the trailer/implement tires. In my restoration, I originally purchased 3-rib replacements and quickly realized that my overgrown lawnmower "Henry" was now ripping up my lawn. I went with ME Miller and they recommended either trailer tires or implements. The trailer tires are used more for highway use and are a higher ply so wearability is probably a lot better over time. I went with the slightly less expensive implements to give them a whirl instead. I was very happy and only on the sharpest turns do I still rut the lawn up. This is almost always my fault because it's usually too wet to mow then anyway. New York has had a very moist summer :(

Hope this helps...

Hey ScottyG,

I may be over your way for the SIRIUS at the Glen NASCAR event this month... You close to the track? (I don't know anybody who isn't out that way, actually.)

My cub came with R145-12 radials on the front. CAR tires!

What kind of car uses tires that small?

That's approximately the size of the Renault I owned about 35 years ago.

Many of the old two wheeled garden tractors used the same wheel as a Cub. Many more used the same wheel center with wider rims. The early Cub Cadets used the same wheel on the rear... as did many other small tractors. Scruffy is wearing turf tires from some unknown garden tractor on the front. One of my project tractors has 13" wheels and tires from an unknown Ford car on the front. In this case, they are studded snow tires. There are a lot of possibilities.

Allen,

I'm about 8 miles from the track and live just above the town of Watkins Glen. Although we'll be out of town the 14th - 15th, the town usually starts with a festival of sorts that Friday night so I'll be down there then. Let me know if you'll be in the area that night.

Will do... I'm going to be in town as a guest of Microsoft - probably bring a few people with me to enjoy the festivities. I'll keep in touch if we make it out that way.
