Help with price

Postby Little Red Cub » Sat Apr 05, 2008 1:52 pm

I am looking at a 140,serial number was in the 1800's best I can remember. Motor rebuilt last year and not used much since. Has not been painted so it isn't a pretty tractor but I am going to use it to garden so it doesn't matter about looks. The clutch chatters when you release it. The tires are pretty bad. Has a one point hitch with cultivator, disk, and breaking plow. Oh yes, it is changed to 12 volts with new battery. He is asking $2800 for it but that seems high to me, what you think? This is the first 140 I have looked at. I have a cub and would like to move up.
Thanks for any advice

without seeing it, I say that is high. now if it was good shape and the implements I would bring close to that here.

140s always bring a premium for some reason. A SA would be nicer and cheaper in my opinion.

I have 2 restored 140's with many implements and I think they are fine tractors. I turned down a really nice one for $2200 last summer with a decent paint job, no issues, and a 5ft rear mower. I wouldn't go $2,800 for an early model with unknown clutch issues. I prefer the later models with the flat nose all the way up, an alternator, and 12.4x24 rear tires. Tires are expensive and what about fixing the clutch? You also need to check the hydraulics, wheel and steering wobble, xmission noise, leaks, etc etc. If every thing else was good and you had an idea about what the clutch needed I would go $2000 to $2300. The implements would motivate me to pursue a purchase in that price range. I might even buy the package expecting to keep the implements and sell the tractor and buy a newer one with no issues. If money is no issue, buy it and restore it.

Clutch is probably not much more than the pilot bearing shot. Still have to split it, but not bad on these.
