New guy 154 wont lift

Postby Garland Terry » Mon Apr 21, 2008 8:12 pm

Just trying this out to see if I am in the system. I have been restoring a 154 for a couple of years. I am having trouble with the lift. It will come up slowly but wont hold up any weight. I have replaced the filter and the fluid is good. The last thing was to disassemble the spool valve and look at the overload valve. It seemed OK and the mechanic at the dealer thought that it looked good. I have replaced all the o-rings so I am going to try that out. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There is not a lot of info on the Numbered Cubs on the server, but the 154 is covered. Have a look.. it might help. Still looking for more Numbered Cub stuff..

Is the tranny full of hytran? (hydraulic oil)

Do you have a 3pt hitch plus the mid rocker shaft plus a selector too? (two hydraulic cylinders)Do you have the hoses right on the selector?

Now do you have oil flow from the pump? You need to check that out. Did you rebuild the hydraulic pump? Since the oil level is below the pump i would try priming the pump too. I'm not sure but i've seen dry pumps in other applications not suck the oil up. Just squirt some oil in the pump.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Look for a leaking/damaged seal on the piston in one of the hydraulic cylinders. I am not familiar with the 154 hydraulic set up. However, from your description the problem is quite common for leaking/damaged seal letting the hydraulic fluid bypass the hydraulic cylinder's piston.

If you have two or more cylinders you need to obtain plugs matching the hydraulic hose ends and block off one cylinder at a time. Block off one cylinder then operate the hydraulics. If the symptom persists. Reconnect the first cylinder then block off the hoses to the second cylinder and operate the system.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Check the fluid level in the reservoir. Refill then work the system up and down. Check the fluid level, refill, work the system, refill. Bubbles in hydraulic fluid = low fluid level or sucking air.
