Local Hay prices??

Postby 1835wayne » Sun Jan 27, 2008 10:41 am

Just curious how high the price has gone elsewhere..........

6 to 7 a small square here, and 65 to 70 for a standard round bale.

My horses are getting more expensive food than me!

Last year I was getting $60 per 1,200 lb round bale and could sell all I could get. This year, only getting $45 per roll and judging by the way it's selling we won't make the fertilizer cost back  If you need some good coastal bremuda just give me a call, have at least 100 balse left or so

From the Ad Tracker. Prices are per bale. Central Missouri.

4x6 round, wrapped $40-.
4x5 1/2 bales $40-.
5x6 round, wrapped $45-.
Round bales $50-.
Large round $65-
Small square $3-.
Small square bales $4-.

There are a number of ads without prices.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I look for it to go up quite a bit here in the next month. Local farmers have been feeding since late August.

Around here it was a rough hay season. First cut was ok, then the rains didn't come, 2nd cut was late. Then as soon as a lot of guys cut, it rained for 3 days. A lot of guys lost their second cut. then a decent third cut was all they got.

I wonder how much it would cost to ship some bales up here from you Donny?? 8)

Rough season here too. First cut OK then no rain. Truck loads of hay were brought in from Arkansas for $65.00

I'm going to cut my bottom land early to be the first on the market. Then hope it brings enough to buy fertilizer and diesel.

I quit feeding hay to my horses. I mix 1 bag crimped oats, 1 bag sweet feed and 1 bag of pulverized beet pulp. they came out of the winter in better shape than going in for about $1 a day each.

In these parts hay really varies $3.00 for small bales to $9.00 for larger square bales. If I get it off the field it's $3.50 to $4.00 for larger sq. bales. Horses farms are driving the prices up, so is fuel. Greed seems to also play a part in driving the price up. My parents were bringing hay back from upstate NY and prices there are still reasonable...$1-$2 a bale.

Anyone selling hay for $1-$2 / bale won't be in business long these days unless he/ she is running their equipment on total solar power. Those days are gone the way of $1/ gallon fuel. $6- $10/ per small sq bale will be the norm for making any profit at it at this point and it will go higher as fuel goes up. All the sale reports in central PA mixed grass hay is still bringing from $160/ ton to $300/ ton now. That is about equal to $4.50/ small square up to $8.33/ same small sq. You can always eat the horses. lol

I have eight acres that I don't want to cut so I let a friend have the field. I told him he could have all he gets off of it all he has to do is seed, fertilize and cut at least twice a year. I saw him about two weeks ago and he said he sold all the hay for forty dollars a roll and before the winter was over he needed hay and had to pay sixty-five a roll. I told him it looked like he needs to brush up on his math a little   . He smiled and said a lesson learned the hard way.
