Very nice job. It looks like a lot went into the lower channels. Was that your hands in the photo working on the battery WITH RINGS?

Rudi,

A sheet metal brake is a handy thing for the shop. It makes it possible to make the tool boxes too. The two bigger boxes on the right were made special for the tricycle Cub, with matching tool boxes. Only one is a battery box... the other is a beverage cooler!

Image

There were 7 battery boxes in that batch, plus the tool boxes. I'll soon make 3 or 4 more. The savings add up.

Jack:

Thanks :!: :)

Carm:   Yup, didn't leave em at the house as I normally do. Rings can lead to no fingers. I know that. After almost over 40 years working in a shop I should know better, but then :!:  That explains it :!: :!: :D I am getting old :!: Yup that's it :!:

George:

I shoulda known! You have a brake don'tcha :?: They certainly are a wonderful thing to have :!:

How did you manage the channel difficulty :?: That part of the box is very, very labour intensive. How did you handle the bottom of the tool box without spot welding :?:

Your boxes look very good :!: Now, tell me :?: What are the chances of a nice sketch and pics on how to make the beverage cooler???? Sounds like an interesting project to make for oneself!!!!

Rudi,

Yes I have a 5' brake... home made. I built it years ago when we were installing the heating/air conditioning in all the homes we built. It makes nice Pittsburg locks.

The battery box bottoms are flat. I allow enough extra depth for a piece of 3/8" plywood with holes where the bolt heads are. It's easier than forming the channels and eliminates part of the distortion from welding. The tool box sides are two piece with an inserted bottom... all brazed in place. I no longer have the Lemco spot welder, so I make do.

I foolishly got rid of a lot of my tools. I sometimes miss the extra table saws and the mig/tig/spot welder... and occasionally the backhoe/loader.

Rudi,
I too have made the same mistake. I work around aircraft Ni-Cad batteries with individual cells. It has always been impressed upon us about the jewelry thing. Its amazing what a battery can produce. That is how I do most of my welding....By accident!

I only wear my ring to church as part of my dress clothes. I have had 2 reminders of reasons for not wearing a ring. Both of them were accidents that happened to others, but I prefer not to duplicate them.

When we were teenagers a friend of mine jumped off a wagon load of corn and caught his classring on a nail, it stripped the flesh off most of the finger. It is still stiff (40 years ago)

The second was when I worked ina 2way radio shop. the stepson of the owner was connecting the power lead at the starter solenoid of a car when he got his ring between the wrench and frame of the vehicle. Nearly burned his finger off before he got loose.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Well Rudi that is a very fine job on the battery box.Are you going to bring one to the cubfest. So we can have a look.I may be interested in one .I think I put a lot of holes on that mouse pad you put over the battery. The battery caps have vents in them if they are blocked .Battery fumes in a confined area with a spark will cause a very dangerous situation(BOOM)  I am in need of a battery and tool box as well :D

Bruce:

Yup, gonna have a few of the battery boxes, tool boxes and cranks :D

I am having a lot of fun with this stuff. It is a change of pace, and I get parts to boot :!: Gotta love it.

There is room btw between the caps and the mouse pad. Also the box is vented. Weep holes as well as the notches at the top of the front panel will provide sufficient ventilation to prevent that type of problem. Good point though :!:

Are you gonna bring the grille?

See you either Friday night or Saturday!
