Mounting tires

Postby Shopp'n Cubs » Thu May 20, 2004 2:29 pm

Well I finally got to mounting the front tires the other day. I know many of you have done your own tires for years but I got to say "It's not a job I would want to do very often!"

When you guys do it, when do you put the tube in? On bike and small tires I have always put one side of the tire on the rim, then tucked the tube up inside, then mounted the remaining side of the tire. That's what I did on the cub fronts but it sure does not have much room to get the tube in there.

I still have a set of brand new rears but I dunno if I want to tackle it or not!

Any hints would be a lot of help.

I always put just enough air in the tube to remove any folds or wrinkles but not really inflate it. It can then be stuffed into position after one bead is on the rim but does not get in the way of spooning the second bead onto the rim. Dave is right, the rears won't be any more difficult than the fronts.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Does anybody put fluid in the tires.. mine has calcium in one and antifreeze in the other. It was like that when I bought it, havent had problems so no reason to change it. For the mostly flat mowing I do is it really necessary?

For most flat mowing conditions weighted tires are not necessary nor really even desirable. They just make ruts easier on soft ground.

I had my front tires replaced last summer because one sidewall was about to blowout. When the tire shop guy took off the old tires, the tubes looked bad, and the guy suggested going back tubeless. They cleaned up the rusty rims, mounted the tires, and they've been fine since. At the time, I was wondering if the rims were designed tubeless.

Tubeless

Postby Tim-Devery » Fri May 21, 2004 6:18 am

I also went tubeless on my "56" Cub when I installed two new front tires.
But, I let her to the Hunting club to cut around the cabin. I quickly found out briers can puncture the front tires. Now I have to get some tubes.
As for filling up the tires with fluid. Is this just to keep from tipping on a slope, or is thier another reason?

Fluid was added to the rear tires to increase weight and traction.
