Light & Charging Switch

Postby michado » Wed May 12, 2004 12:35 pm

Having a problem with my lights and since I'm a night time/weekend farmer its tough.
Both the low & high work, but the when the dim and bright is switched on the lights no longer work.
When the D & B is switched though it's still charging.

Check the fuse on the back of the switch. The switch performs 2 functions. 1 it sets the charge rate & 2 it switches the lights on. The functions are separate. I think you will find your fuse is blown, loose or missing.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Can you check for voltage at the fuse? If you have voltage at the point where the lights attach, then the problem is in the wiring to the lights or more likely, poor grounds at the lights.

Your Cub has a cutout relay and the switch is a 4 position switch. Low charge, High charge, dim lights and bright lights.

These switchs were normally long lived and did not give to many problems.

Check if the resistors are connected well or broken. If they are whole then you more than likely have a broken wire.

The head light cables are in the main harness loom.

This is the scoop, this problem started a couple of weeks ago. At that time one night I left the light switch on over night. No big deal since the lights had not been working anyway. The next day or so the battery was dead, I cranked it over by hand and the lights came on. The lights haven't worked since.
This tuesday night I deceidied to leave the light switch on over night to see what would happen and yep you guessed it, last night the battery was dead, one crank and the lights were back on. The lights on this tractor have always worked since my uncle purchased it in 48.
Will see what tonight brings.

Thanks

The lights are back on. Why they were not before? I have no idea.

Thanks

Isn't corrosion great :!: :!: Sounds like the fuse contacts or a ground someplace is corroded.

Yep Donny,

Good solid "DRY" corrosion is a G-R-E-A-T insulator. I seen bare twisted telecommunication cable with dry corrosion in the attic working just fine
with little or no crosstalk or unbalance.
