Well Ya`know, Curiosity does not always kilt the cat but sometimes it can sure cause one Big vet bill. SO, I think as long as it works well as is that I will stifle my curiousity and leave it as is.

as Jim Becker said, it's replacing the cutout with a blocking diode. a doide allows the generator to charge the battery with a .7 volt drop across the diode but will not allow the battery to drain through the generator under idle or off conditions. that diode needs to be preety large to handle 10 or so amps on 100% duty cycle.
iffn you are looking to make it correct, then removing it and using a regulator is the route.
