Herbicide Mixing Rates.

Problem. I purchased a herbicide specifically used for asparagus and other vegatables, and under fruit and nut trees. The instructions provide mixing rates in pounds per acre. Example: Apply 2 lbs per acre. How do I compute the mixing rates into gallons?

I plan on using the herbicide in a 2 gallon hand sprayer and a 15 gallon tank - electric pump- sprayer for spot spraying.

I have e-mailed the manufacturer. No response to date.

I work at an agricultural research station and often do chemical spraying. I usually do field spraying and know how many gallons of liquid I want to apply per acre. However, when spot spraying with a hand sprayer, a weed specialist advised me to use a 44 gallon per acre rate. At your rate of 2 pounds chemical per acre, that would amount to 41 grams of herbicide per 2 gallons of water. If using your 15 gallon sprayer, that would be 310 grams per 15 gallons water.

I am going to spray "Karmex XP", (Diuron:3(3.4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea).

If you don't mind, figure 2 lbs per acre. I can adjust the mixture up or down according to the intended usage.

I have no scales. Can you convert grams to a convienient measure such as teaspoon, tablespoon or cups. No problem here. Grams X .0353 = Ounces.

Funny you should mention the unmarked Crown Vics. Must be the Mustang Drug Task Force. In this area the only people who can afford Crown Vics are the police.

The current and best method of destroying the wild hemp is to rake it into very small piles. Every other day you set one pile on fire, being sure not to get down wind of the fire (smoke). Most years it will take a full year to destroy all of the cut down hemp.

It is hard to make a recommendation not knowing the soil type and other specifics. Make sure you read all of the label to make sure you don't apply too much.

The following link is to the LSU AgCenter wesite and its pesticide control guides. This particular guide is for insects but there is a good section on conversions for liquid and powder chemicals. Based on these charts and using the 50 gallons water per acre rate (closest to 44 gallon rate recommended earlier), you would use 2 tablespoons Karmex per gallon water at the 2 pounds per acre rate.

Karmex is a potent chemical used for soil sterilization at high rates. Read the label good. Hope this helps. Email back if you have more questions.
