water pump on my 45 A
OK I have a 1945 Farmall A. It has a steel shifter knob and it is S/N 143037. I was trying to figure out where the radiator was leaking and it was leaking at all places the water pump yes the water pump This looks to be a later engine. It also has the dip stick for the oil and also the pet cocks on the oil pan. What are the numbers I need to look for and where will they be to see what block I have? I think its a C-123 engine.
can anyone help me figure out what I have.

Look for the engine number, stamped onto a flat boss on the block, right side, to the front, very top edge, view obstructed by the governor control rod.
Date code, directly below the engine number, at the bottom edge of the block.
Check part number of the block, somewhere on the right side.
Is there a blank plate covering an opening for a hydraulic pump? It would be below the magneto.
Is it a power unit engine? Look for a cast-in starter cutout on the block in the same position as the Cub starter is mounted.
If it is late enough, it could have C-123 cast into one side or the other of the block.

Chad- The part number for the block is on the right side-sort of between the oil filter and the distributor(or mag)-that year "A" should have a block with a # something like 6342DX. If it's a newer block, a 6-digit+suffix, like 354895R92. A water pump can be added to an early engine, and I think power units used a dipstick. Hope this helps.

ok I found my slip that I wrote on when I was down there.
behind the oil filter it looked to be 6342D
bottom front of engine was hard to read looked like 11.21.0
I will look that one over again it was very hard to read.
I will look for the part number on the top of the block.
thanks for the help so far.
my A also seems slower in each gear then my dads 1940 A is that possible of just my imagination?
the thing is running good with 7 year old gas or better lol I need new stuff.

Valu-Bilt catalog list water pumps by tractor model and casting number. I assume the casting number is the one on the water pump. The same water pump (listed) fits; A, Super A, C Super C, 100 - etc. 2 bolt. Price is $110.39
Suggest pricing the water pump at your local autoparts store and Case IH dealer.
Water pump replacement is not a major job.
