Farmall A transmission rebuild

Postby bald » Mon Mar 12, 2007 11:22 am

We are going through a replacment transmission for a Farmall Super A. 1. The IH service manual for the A talks about backlash values, but doesn't give any preload information. Should we just ignore preload or do those values/specs exist somewhere?
2. There is a transmission oiler gear on the countershaft which is missing one tooth. It looks like an an aluminum(?) gear. Can't tell for sure, but doesnt look like it meshes with anything. Will the missing tooth cause any problems if we don't replace it.
I'm just learning and want to get it right.
Thanks, bald, Southeast Georgia
Another wonderful day in paradise.

A cubs preload sets to 8lbs, I'd at least set it to that. The oil gear shouldn't matter if it doesn't mesh with anything. Brandon.

Been a long time since I have been into an A differential. Aren't the bearings all ball bearings? I think you just take out the end play but don't preload it.

The oil slinger should turn freely on the lower shaft and mesh with a gear on the upper shaft. I would rather not have a tooth missing on it, but not sure it absolutely has to be changed. As I recall, the gear is die cast zinc.

Also the oiler gear is for keeping the gear oil moving while using the pto with the tractor stationary. the other gears will distribute the oil while the tractor is moving. Don't know if the one tooth will couse problems.

Thanks for the help guys.
Jim, you're way ahead of me in A transmission experience; the last transmission I was into was on my 1946 Chevy in high school. You're right about the bearings-all ball bearings.
Brandon, I was wrong about the oiler gear not meshing. It does mesh with an upper gear.
2 busy, it does make sense that they added the oiler gear to help lube during stationary work off the pto.
Bob Schroer, one of our Woodbine Antique Tractor Club members is helping me out on this. He knows a lot but doesn't see too well 8) and I see well but don't know too much :? ..quite a team.
Thank you, bald

Bald,

I got your IM and just have been busy......anyway, I am like Jim--I had prefer no teeth be missing, but I am not 100% sure it's a matter of life and death if some are. Do you plan to run the PTO?

Al, I had wanted the SA to be available as a backup mower. We already have a woods L59 mower deck.
An email was sent to JP Salvage looking for the oiler gear, but no response yet. I'm scared to look at Case/IH for fear the price will give me a heart attack, but it may get to that.
I'm flying out in the morning to Kansas to attend a funeral so will be out of contact for a few days.
Thanks, Harvey

I looked at Cash/IH for you, you don't want to know. As Bermuda Ken Updike always tells me, just be glad you can buy parts for a 50 year old tractor. A&I (after-market) lists one for $112.00 I have bought some of their parts before and the quality was good. I think someone on the board is an A&I dealer.
