154 clutch problem

Postby ILL John » Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:31 am

I've had 2 different rebuilt clutches from my IH dealer, the 1st one had 1 finger .060" lower than the other 2 when installed, just got done installing the 2nd one, it has 1 finger .100" and another .030" lower than the one touching the t/o brg. He offers a new pressure plate for about $160, am I going to have the same problem with the new one? These fingers are not adjustable, can't figure why a rebuilder would bother if they can't get any closer than these measurements, or am I being too picky? It would be impossible to set the correct clearance on these rebuilts :? Any advice is welcome, I never thought installing a clutch would be this complicated  Thanks in advance. John

I had the same problem with a pressure plate purchased from an IH dealer. The pressure plate was made in India. The adjusting screws were lock tighted in. I finally purchased a used, rebuilt pressure plate from a commercial tractor salvage firm. The fingers were adjustable. The rebuilt pressure plate is made of heavier metal (steel) than the new IH plate.

These are rebuilt in Humbolt Iowa, by Hy Capacity, go figure, the very nature of the 154 is the fingers aren't adjustable, that's the problem------I think! If there's a substitute, I'm open to suggestions, the way I'm going, I'll not get'er done 'til 08 or 09.

Show off your tractor, i am sure someone here will know how to address your problem, if you got the parts. Or just enjoy the fellowship and viewing of other peoples cubs and the food. Oh yeah, and the door prizes.

Doc - I think the "To do what?" comment is in reference to Matt's '18" Crescent wrench and a bit of force' reply.

Ill John - I think Matt was suggesting some brute force adjustment to the fingers. :D

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Check the thickness of your clutch disc in several locations around the circle. Diffrences in thickness can cause your problem. Each time the pedal is pushed & released, a different finger will be the high one. I'm not saying that's your problem, but it has bit me before.

I've changed the "clock" position on both the pressureplates, spun the disc, it's always the same finger that's low. Is there an adjustable finger pressureplate available for this 154?
